Blog Tour Book Review – Beyond the Broken Shore By Rebecca L Marsh

0

I am here today as part of Rebecca L Marsh’s Blog Tour to introduce you to her next book Beyond the Broken Shore. I was kindly given this wonderful opportunity to read this new book as a pre-release in return for my honest review.

Who is Rebecca L Marsh, well Rebecca, is an award-winning author of women’s fiction and member of the Paulding County Writer’s Guild. She grew up in the mountains of western North Carolina, and now lives in Dallas, Georgia with her husband.

She is a Christian, a mother to a beautiful daughter, and an animal lover. When she isn’t writing, she enjoys spending time with her family (cats and dog included), reading a good book, watching a movie, or playing a game.

The book we are here to talk about today, Beyond the Broken Shore is the third novel in the Princess Island series and is due to be published on 25th July 2024.

Beyond The Broken Shore by Rebecca L Marsh

My rating – ★★★★★

Goodreads – 4.7/5

Synopsis

Haunted by the memory of a devastating accident that claimed the lives of her husband and oldest daughter, Marissa’s life is struck by another tragedy. Her thirteen-year-old daughter, Maisy, suffers a perilous fall under mysterious circumstances. Marissa finds herself desperately hoping her deepest fear—the loss of another child—will not be realized.

While Marissa paces the emergency room, her brother Owen searches their town on Princess Island for his son, Charlie, who hasn’t come home from school. Hours later, Charlie shows up unwilling to explain where he’s been. When he skips school a few days later, and is spotted in town with a strange woman, Owen comes face to face with his own greatest fear—the return of Charlie’s mother.

As Marissa and Owen confront their worst fears and navigate the treacherous waters of the unknown, they realize that while the path forward might be fraught with pain, the potential for healing is immense.

My Review

Having read a couple of Rebecca’s books now, when she offered me the chance to read and review Beyond the Broken Shore, I was a little excited to say the least. With my TBR pile screaming at me from the side, I guiltily started reading, my guilt for all those unread books soon disappeared as I was fully emersed, struggling to put this book down and found myself finding time to go back to it throughout the day, even if it was to get just another couple of pages read.

From the moment I started reading I was swept back into Island life, into the close family unit and made to feel at home once more. The whole story-line flowed at a nice steady pace, it was wonderfully written, and kept me wanting more.

Having met these characters in previous books I wondered if Rebecca could maintain their backstories and keep them all as I remembered, well, she portrayed them all perfectly. The story had the characters facing fears, giving second chances, struggling with guilt and finding the power of forgiveness. It also sympathetically touched on the difficult subject of addiction. Throughout the book you were constantly drawn into these emotions, which left you praying for the family.

Would I read this as a stand-alone book? No don’t do it…

You could and it would work really well as a stand-alone book but if you read the other books in the series first, you would have a far better understanding and love for each of the characters and life on the island, this would then give you a more enjoyable read. Let’s face it when we know a book is part of a series, we all like to the idea of starting at the beginning and working our way through, and this princess island series is certainly well worth a read.

You will find my review of the first book of the princess island series, Where Hope is found here and the second book Summer’s Runaway here.

Thank you, Rebecca for this opportunity, I thoroughly enjoyed this captivating book, being apart of your blog tour and I look forward to your next book.

Arden by G D Harper #Review

0

We start 2025 by visiting the sixteenth century and meeting two remarkable people from the time, one of whom happens to be William Shakespeare. Arden by G D Harper was published on October 1st by Ginger Cat.

The astonishing untold story of Shakespeare’s first
play

Alice
Arden, idealistic and wealthy beauty, burnt at the stake for killing
her husband, the former mayor of Faversham in Kent. But was she really
the one responsible for the most scandalous murder of the sixteenth
century?

William Shakespeare, England’s greatest playwright, born
thirteen years after Alice’s execution. Why does his first-ever play,
written about this murder, not bear his name?

This is a story of
two people – one reviled, one revered – whose fates become linked in a
tale of corruption, collusion and conspiracy. Based on historical
documents and recently published academic research,

Arden
unveils shocking new evidence about the murder of Thomas Arden and
reveals, for the first time, a remarkable new theory about Shakespeare’s
early years.

My Thoughts

This has got my 2025 reading off to a cracking start. You are taken back to the sixteenth century in two different story threads which converge. Anne Arden’s life as a respectable gentlewoman is far from conventional and her homelife is challenging. From the outside, she has to appear respectable but the reality of her life is troubled. You feel the suffocating expectations of women which society enforces as she struggles to conform. Men, it seems, can act as they want.

William Shakespere (as he most likely spelt his name) is a young man with a wife and children to support. He has an impetuous side which leads him into trouble but he too is struggling to conform to his family’s expectations. Several decades separate the two story threads. You follow Will as he tries to learn the craft of the actor and the playwright. Full of period detail about the daily life of these two people, these are characters who emerge from the pages. Anne’s life becomes dangerous and treacherous and you can understand how Will is attracted to the drama of her life. From the start, you know that there is a grisly end in store for her. With some fascinating photographs and a thorough appendix of G D Harper’s research into the period, you are posed with the fascinating contention that an anonymous play could in fact be Shakespere’s first play.

In short: drama, intrigue, infamy

Title: The Twelve

Author: Liz Hyder

Published: 10th October 2024

Publisher: Pushkin’s Children’s Books

Genre: YA, Fantasy

Rating: 3.5/5 stars

As the Winter solstice blankets the Pembrokeshire landscape in an otherworldly glow, sisters Kit and Libby are drawn to a mysterious white tower to test a prophecy they have heard talked about. But when the magic of the tower causes Libby to vanish, they find themselves caught in a mystery that takes them in to the deep past. Libby has been erased from the world – her laughter, her presence, even their mother’s memories of her have all disappeared.

The world has rewritten itself, leaving Kit to navigate a reality where her sister doesn’t exist. Determined to unravel the enigma surrounding her sister’s disappearance, Kit joins forces with a local boy named Story. Together, they journey through a world steeped in ancient folklore, on a quest fraught with danger beyond their wildest imagination. The race is on to find a sister, help heal a cosmic wound and put the world back on its proper course. This lyrical and beautiful novel explores themes of responsibility both personal and political and the importance of love and friendship to make good in the world.

Waterstones

Huge thank you to Pushkin Children’s Books for sending me a proof copy of The Twelve!

I was very intrigued by the book, both the blurb and the fact that the author’s previous book had won prizes, but didn’t quite hit the mark with me. I was very interested to see if I maybe just didn’t gel with this author, or if it was something more. I’m happy to say that it was just me!

I really liked this novel. It was a very interesting idea for a narrative, which was a real page turner. Despite the short number of pages, Hyder packs a lot of content in. It’s equal parts haunting and heart-warming.

I really liked the characters in the novel. Kit is a lovely main character, the care she has for her sister is so evident and pours off the page. Story is our other main character, a very intriguing and mysterious character. Hyder drip feeds the info about him into the narrative, and we are never quite sure about him. I liked this ambiguity about the character, it added to the overall mystery of the novel.

This novel draws on folklore and rituals to create a novel that both feels contemporary and historic at the same time. The influences of magic and mythology are strongly woven through the narrative, and make the novel feel almost timeless.

Overall I enjoyed The Twelve. It is a unique teen novel with a different premise. It deftly deals with some difficult topics without ever feeling overbearing. I really enjoyed the mythology and the folklore elements, and would recommend as a quick teen read!

Huge thank you again to Pushkin Children’s Books for the proof copy of The Twelve.
