Talking Header Images – AnnaBookBel

0

One last fun post before School starts; I do have book reviews scheduled – honest!

I was looking at my header images on the blog, and wondering if I should update them… Obviously, they’re cut down from larger photos to fit. I have six current ones, which are randomised to appear with each refresh of my home page.

This was my original that I used all the way from the moment I moved my blog from Blogger to WP. Moody in black and white, each of the books in this photo got five stars from me.

Next I added my Folio Society collection of Andrew Lang’s Fairy Books – the full rainbow. I really ought to retake this photo. It’s even more blurry when enlarged on the header.

Next came my Beryl Bainbridge collection, added for my first BBRW in 2012.

In 2020 I added one for my first Paul Auster Reading Week, which gives me the opportunity to re-plug the forthcoming second Auster Reading Week from 3-10 Feb. I should update this photo too, as I can add Baumgartner to my collection.

And finally, the header I added after my first Nordic FINDS month in Jan 2022 – all the books and films I read and watched for it.

I used to have one more, with one of my book poems in – stacks of books whose titles read together could be a poem. But it cropped the ends off so I deleted it. I’m happy staying with these five for now! I hope you’ve enjoyed this diversion.

Happy publication day, Puzzle Book!

I’m delighted to say that The Most Unladylike Puzzle Book is out NOW in the UK and Ireland!

It’s packed full of puzzles – there are over 100 (!) to solve – and it features stories about all of your favourite Murder Most Unladylike and Ministry characters! There are chapters from Daisy, Hazel, Eric, May, Nuala, Beanie, George and Alexander, and each chapter will help you practice a different set of skills that every detective needs!

Even though there are two covers, it’s only one book – you solve half of the puzzles and read through the stories, and then you flip the book and solve the other half!

I’m so proud of it, and I really hope you love working through it.

If you want to meet me, here’s a link to my tour (with one new event added, a virtual event for schools!), and if you want to order your copy of the book, you can get it from Bookshop.org, Waterstones, Blackwell’s, Dubray, Eason’s and Amazon. And if you can, get down to your local store and pick up a copy – there are signed editions in a lot of independent bookstores this month!

Ice Town by Will Dean

0

ONE WAY IN. NO WAY OUT.‘Deaf teenager goes missing in Esseberg. Mountain rescue are launching a search party but conditions hinder their efforts. The tunnel is being kept open all night as an exception.’

When journalist Tuva Moodyson reads this news alert she knows she must join the search. If this teenager is found, she will be able to communicate with him in a way no one else can.

Esseberg lies on the other side of a mountain tunnel: there is only one way in and one way out. When the tunnel closes at night, the residents are left to fend for themselves. And as more people go missing, it becomes clear that there is a killer among them …

I have only read two books by Will Dean, The Last Passenger and The Chamber so I haven’t been introduced to to Tuva Moodyson until starting Ice Town. This storyline is a slow burn and my interest wasn’t piqued until chapter 20 but from then onwards I was drawn into the hunt to solve the clues that would lead to the mysterious Bear Spray Murderer.

The setting of this book couldn’t have been more apt with it being cut off from the rest of the world only connected by a tunnel that isn’t acceptable 24/7 and with the dark forest blanketed in deathly snow just makes this a chilling base to the plot.

I loved the inclusion of two death characters but I wish this was explored more in the book as I can only imagine how much more scary and sinister things would feel in this situation in Ice Town when you also have a hearing impairment too.

I was certainly kept off the right path because I didn’t even have a hint of suspicion for the murderer so this was an unpredictable read. I enjoyed this book and I feel like I would have enjoyed it more if I had read the previous books and had a bond with Tuva but all this has made me want to do is go and pick up all of the previous books.
