Maureen Fry and The Angel of The North By Rachel Joyce

My Rating ★★★★★

Goodreads: 3.96/5

Genre: Women’s Literary Fiction

Maureen Fry and The Angel of The North was first published in 2022. The finale to a moving trilogy.

Synopsis

Ten years ago, Harold Fry set off on his epic journey on
foot to save a friend. But the story doesn’t end there.

Now his wife, Maureen, has her own pilgrimage to make.

Maureen Fry has settled into the quiet life she now shares with her husband
Harold after his iconic walk across England. Now, ten years later, an
unexpected message from the North disturbs her equilibrium again, and this time
it is Maureen’s turn to make her own journey.

But Maureen is not like Harold. She struggles to bond with strangers, and the
landscape she crosses has changed radically. She has little sense of what
she’ll find at the end of the road. All she knows is that she must get there.

My Review

I was gifted this book for Christmas and having read, The Unlikely
Pilgrimage of Harold Fry and The Love Song of Miss Queenie Henessy I was
excited to get started on Maureen’s journey.

At first as I started reading all I could see was a
difficult, angry, rude women and quite frankly I did not like her. She was the
total opposite to Harold and I did wonder if she would complete her journey. As
the book progressed, I softened to Maureen, as her loss and unhappiness were exposed
and I found myself hoping that she finds a way to get some closure and manages to find
herself – I believe she did.

This book although short was packed full with emotion, from grief
and guilt and all the suffering that can come from it to friendship and love.
It certainly highlighted for me, that we should not judge a book by its cover as
we don’t know what that person is going through on the inside.

If you have stumbled across Maureen Fry and think mmm I
fancy a read, don’t bother until you have read the first two. I do not think
you would have a clue what was going on if you read it as a stand alone novel
but as part of the Trilogy I works perfectly.

I found it a very enjoyable but moving read, thank you Rachel Joyce for taking us on
Maureen’s Journey – I did not even realise that I needed this book!

Starting Over at Starlight Cottage by Debbie Viggiano #Review #StarlightSeriesBook1

The first in the Starlight Series by Debbie Viggiano, Starting Over at Starlight Cottage, was published by Unicorn Publishing on 1st December 2024

Stars Can’t Shine Without Darkness…

49-year-old Tilly Thomas would never have known any
different if she hadn’t unexpectedly turned up at hubby Robin’s office to
surprise him with an off-the-cuff evening at the theatre.  Instead, the surprise is on Tilly when she
interrupts Robin and his young PA in a compromising position.

Stumbling from the office, blinded by tears, Tilly thanks
God she was never gifted the children she once craved and is spared explaining
why Mummy and Daddy will now be living apart.
Instead, Tilly has an adopted daughter – but this little girl has a wet
nose and warm heart.

Mongrel Cindy is privy to all her mummy’s hopes and dreams
as Tilly prepares to start over in the village of Starlight Croft.  Thank goodness a dog can’t speak because
Cindy knows things her mistress has never shared, including a secret that once
broke Tilly’s heart.

As Tilly prepares to embrace an unknown future and make
peace with her past, she discovers that sometimes difficult roads lead to
beautiful destinations…

My Thoughts

In the first of a new series, we follow Tilly as she adjusts to life post- divorce and tries to come to terms with her new life. Forced to move out of her marital home, she finds that her life is in freefall and has to look around for new horizons. As she prepares to start over, Tilly finds somewhere which seems to be the answer.  Friendship is very important in the story and she has a huge amount of support.

I can’t say any more about the plot as I don’t want to give away any surprises. I did enjoy Tilly’s conversations with her adored pet dog, her adopted ‘daughter’, who is an inquisitive bundle of fur who in some ways, helps Tilly to not feel so alone. The community she finds near Starlight Cottage, especially in the local pub, have potential for future stories and I can say that this is a promising start to the series.

In short: new horizons

About the Author

Prior to turning her attention to writing, Debbie Viggiano
was, for more years than she cares to remember, a legal secretary. She lives

from when they want to raid the fridge or eat her secret stash of chocolate.

A Short History of the Adelaide Hospital

0

The Adelaide Hospital was named in honour of Queen Adelaide, the widow of King William IV, and was originally known as the ‘Adelaide Institution and Protestant Hospital’. It was founded by Dr Albert Jasper Walsh at 43 (later renumbered 39) Bride Street in 1839 and the hospital remained there until 1847. The object of the Adelaide […]

The Viscount and the Thief by Emma Orchard. – BookLoverWorm

Today I’m reviewing an author that’s new to me, though I’m not unfamiliar with her books. Many thanks to Rachel’s Random Resources and Boldwood Books for having me on the tour and sending me a copy of the book to review.

The Book:

Spring, 1811… A stranger arrives at Wyverne Hall

Sophie Delavallois is the new companion to the ageing Dowager Marchioness, but she also has another reason for coming to the infamous Wyverne mansion, one that will shake the family to their core.

Lord Drake left his childhood home many years ago, and only returns now to see his beloved grandmother. He takes little interest in the goings on of the house, until the arrival of Mademoiselle Delavallois. There’s something about her that he can’t put his finger on; it’s as if he’s seen her before, but surely, that is not possible…

Sophie is also drawn to Drake, but he is a Wyverne, and she cannot allow herself to fall for him, because her intentions towards the family are resolute – revenge. But inside the walls of Wyverne Hall, she discovers the rumours about the family barely scratch the surface, and she can’t escape the dangerous allure of the Viscount.

Once her plans are set in motion, will he be her saviour or her ruin?

The Review : I’ve seen and heard about the books by this author because they keep popping up anytime I see anything about Bridgerton. This made me curious so when this book popped onto my radar I was too tempted to turn it down and I’m glad I didn’t. I loved this book, it drew me in from the first pages and though I started reading it late one evening I was tempted to keep going all night. It’s one of those books that has you thinking, just one more chapter, a few more pages, and next thing you know you’ve read half the book or only have 10% left according to your kindle, and it seems silly to stop reading there.

I liked Sophie, Drake and the Dowager Marchioness. All of them are strong, solid characters who find themselves in positions that they would rather not be in, for various reasons, though all are connected to Lord Wyverne. The way they dealt with their situations were fitting I felt, for the time period and in some cases quite dramatic. There’s a lot in this story including plenty of drama and tension which I hadn’t expected. I thought there would be some drama given the title and the blurb but I hadn’t expected as much as there was, but again it was fitting.

The descriptions of the house, the rooms used and even the grounds were brilliantly clear. I have very vivid imagery in my head when I read and when reading this book I could clearly see the little details described, for example in Lord Drake’s bedroom, even down to the pattern on the wallpaper, I also felt all the tension and worry of the characters as events unfolded in the book. When this is what my reading experience is like, then I know it’s a really good book.

If you’re looking for a period drama, something with some tension, a bit of spice and a read that will keep you wondering then this book is definitely worth checking out.

The Author:

Emma Orchard grew up in Salford and was given tickets to the grown-up library at the age of 11 because she’d read all the children’s books and the librarians were sick of the sight of her. She became obsessed with Georgette Heyer and hasn’t stopped reading her novels since. She studied English Literature at university and went on to work at Mills & Boon and behind the scenes in television and in publishing.
