REVIEW
I’ll start with a little background about the authors of this book, it’s their family history really which kind of makes the book a tiny bit memoir-ish.
Jerry the father (of this father & son book duo), started in what became the family business in 1986 originally just to ‘help out’ but ended up never leaving!
Zach (the son of the duo) did other things until his father Jerry, talked him into joining him in the family business in 2018. Zach is the one that does the marketing and social media for the business. This father & son team are 3rd and 4th generation dry cleaners.
The business they own & operate is Jeeves New York and it concentrates on and deals with working on high value speciality garments
Jeeves the business, was originally established in London in 1969 and has expanded far and wide as there are now Jeeves stores in 17 cities all around the globe. Jeeves also has a Royal Warrant meaning they take care of the royal clothing including those beautiful beaded, bejewelled gowns the female members of the family wear.
Jeeves is a luxury dry cleaners, when asked why does Jeeves exist their reply is would you take a ‘Ferrari car to a Ford garage’ therefore Jeeves exists for those heirloom, bespoke, vintage, couture, one of a kind items that need cleaning.
In 2020 when the global pandemic hit business dropped by 85% overnight! So needing to find a way to diversify, is how this book came about.
The authors describe it this ‘field guide to laundry’ designed to be dipped in and out of, as and when needed.
The book is set out in Chapters and then those Chapters are split into different sections. Chapter 1 covers the history of laundry, which though I had ideas about I still found really interesting to read about. How “doing the laundry” began by beating clothes on rocks by the river where the flowing water took away the stains and odour. How the “Valcha” aka washboard was invented in the 17th century. It was also interesting to learn that the original laundry soap was olive oil & ash. Early laundry methods were time consuming and hard work, thankfully with the invention of washing machines things improved.
I loved the “fun fact” that in Germany if your washing machine is considered noisy you will not be allowed to use it during “quiet time” which is 10pm to 6am and the whole day Sunday!
The book also covers an over view of laundry products, laundry detergent such as – liquid, gel, pods, tabs etc, then there’s the laundry boosters, liquid fabric softener, dryer sheets, dryer balls, and the newer arrival of scent beads too.
There’s advice on leaving buttons undone, pulling zipper closed and what “like items together” really means. Stain removal advice stating to treat the stain immediately even if you cannot wash the item immediately, at the stain remover is then working.
There’s even a section on “How often should you wash your stuff” such as anything you perspire on should be washed after wearing once along with things like baby clothes, and underwear. Bath towels at least once a week, blankets monthly, the list continues.
The book advises different methods of drying clothes as well as the benefits of ironing versus steaming etc.
The book gives advice on how to choose a dry cleaner. It also covers the difference between a dry cleaner and dry cleaning. A dry cleaner uses a variety of solvents including water to clean cloth, whereas dry cleaning which is a specific art of cleaning using waterless solvents.
The book also gives website links for sites on best liquids etc, washing machines, dryers etc
along with ‘pro tips’ such as laundry bag for socks, or safety pin them together! Zach and Jerry also share stories of garments they’ve rescued.
This book really is a brilliant guide to everything laundry related, a book every household should have! Whether you’re starting out in your first home doing your own laundry or you’ve been doing the laundry for a large household for years …there is something in this book for everyone! Would make a perfect new home gift or for Uni students who will be doing their own laundry for the first time. It reminded me of CSE home economics lessons at school learning all the laundry care labels etc. It is the type of book you need sitting on the book shelf or on your e-reader or phone to refer to when you get that awkward stain on your favourite outfit!

Winstonsdads dozen for 24 – Winstonsdad’s Blog
I’ve decided to draw a line under the year review-wise and do a round-up of my favourite books and then one of the other things I like: Film, TV shows and Music. Then, a post looking forward to 2025 and a year of classics; although I will have a few from this year to review or am not yet not quite sure what to do, just leave them unreviewed and do all classics from pre-1972 next year. So, I managed 103 books that were reviewed in 24 countries. I need keep a better track of starts like that next year. Anyway, I am picking 12 favourites from the year, in no particular order, just 12 books I have loved over the last 12 months. I am not swayed by anyone else view on these books or tastes. So as ever, I hope to bring a fresh list of 12 books
1, Ædnan an Epic by Linea Axelsson
First up is a verse epic of the Sami community, I was just thinking of this earlier today as I watched someone ride the Inlandsbanan an old rail line through Sami lands to the south of Sweden
2 Star 111 by Lutz Seiler
This epic book should have had a wider readership for me as it captured those post-war years in Germany when we followed the path of Carl and his parents! A wild ride of a book from one of the great German writers.
3. What is Mine by Jose Henrique Bortoluci
A son recalls his father’s years as a truck driver around Brazil in those turbulent years of the 80s. It reminds me of how great nonfiction in translation can be.
4. A Terrace in Rome by Pascal Quingard
The story of one man’s life, Geoffrey Meaume, an engraver, is scarred early on in the book when acid is thrown at him. We see the effect of that on him and his art. A writer I have been meaning to get to for many a year.
5.Engagement by Ciler Ilhan
I read two excellent novels with similar themes from Turkey this year, but this, although less well-known, captures the brutal aftermath of a falling out between two villages as well, if not better than the other Turkish book I read this year.
6.Out of Mind by J Bernlef
A book lost to time, which is a shame. It captures his descent into Dementia so well as we see him struggling with a clever recurring thread around a book by Graham Greene, considered one of the best Dutch books of all time.
7.Götz and Meyer by Daivd Albahari
One, I have the Mookse and gripes podcast as they mentioned it in an episode a while ago, and since then, it was just a matter of finding a copy, which I did this year and then read straight away and wasn’t disappointed a man connects to the lose of his family in the world war in the holocaust by the name of two drivers that drove his family to their deaths.
8.Brandy Sour by Constantia Soteriou
One of the greatest discoveries of the year was Foundry Editions, with this first book that had a history of Cyprus tied into the characters of a hotel and the drinks they all drink. It was a very clever little book that made me want to make some of the drinks mentioned.
9.My favourite by Sarah Jollien-Fardel
This powerful book follows a daughter from a small village ith an abusive father and how all in the village turned a blind eye to what he did a compelling book
10.Dendrites by Kallia Papdaki
A Greek novel sent in the US follows the collapse of industrial America through the Greek families that moved to New Jersey to work in the factories. If Springsteen had been Greek, this would be his family’s story !!
11.Beloved by Empar Moliner
Another favourite press three-time rebel and sadly the last of their iconic cover art as the artist who did them passed away to cancer. All monies from this book went to charity. A woman sees a flicker between her husband and a violinist in the orchestra he is in, and before he knows it she knows he will leave her.
12. Your Little Matter by Maria Grazia Calandrone
A second book from Foundry Press is probably my book of the year. It blew me away a heart-wrenching story of a woman looking into her own past as an abandoned baby and the mother she never knew who abandoned her as a baby. It is just a look at how hard it would be for a woman in a small village to escape a broken marriage and find love.
Honourable mentions
Night of the Crow by Abel Tomé
The Fire by Daniela Krien
Caesaria by Hanna Nordenhök
In the last few years, I have been drawn more to great female writers in translation. Seven of the twelve are females, and eight are from small presses.

Redemption by Jack Jordan #BookReview #Blogathon
Aaron Alexander has just been released from jail after serving eleven years for causing the death of Joshua Moore in a hit-and-run. Now a free man, all he wants to do is stay on the straight and narrow and leave his troubled past behind him.
But for Joshua’s mother Evelyn, eleven years in jail isn’t nearly enough. Consumed by grief and rage, she has been waiting for Aaron’s release, counting down the days until she can exact the revenge he deserves. And now that time has come.
But as Evelyn and her husband Tobias embark on a road trip to track Aaron down, they find themselves caught on two different sides of a gripping game of cat-and-mouse. Because Tobias knows what Evelyn is planning, and he will do anything to save her from herself.
Even if it means protecting the man who killed their son.
Locked in a collision course set in motion eleven years ago, Aaron, Evelyn and Tobias are about to find out whether the road they have chosen leads to redemption . . . or to retribution.
I’m delighted to be sharing my review of Redemption as part of the Jack Jordan blogathon today. Many thanks to Tracy Fenton for inviting me and Simon & Schuster for my digital copy of the novel.
Jack Jordan excels at putting his characters into the most awful situations, where every possible option is almost unthinkable and then allowing the drama to unfold in the most unexpected ways. His latest book, Redemption is a breathlessly tense rollercoaster of a read from start to finish but unlike Do No Harm and Conviction, the moral dilemmas aren’t thrust upon Evelyn and Tobias by a calculating villain; here they are driven by a devastating loss which ripped their world apart.
After a deceptively light-hearted introduction to the young couple, madly in love and nervously but eagerly anticipating the birth of their first child, the storyline skips forward several years. The death of their son, Joshua who was killed in a hit-and-run accident has left them broken shadows of the people they once were. However, with Joshua’s killer, Aaron Alexander newly released from his eleven year prison sentence, she believes she will finally be able to fulfil her obligation to her son by avenging his death. Meanwhile, Tobias walks on eggshells around the woman he still loves, desperate for the occasional glimpse of the old Evelyn despite her contemptuous, dismissive treatment of him.
As she sets off on her vengeful road trip, he is a reluctant companion who has realised that if he has any chance of having his wife return to him, must prevent her carrying out the act she has so meticulously planned, Evelyn’s white-hot rage is all-consuming and the raging wildfires which are drawing ever closer to them are an intense, physical representation of her excruciating grief. As she spirals out of control, she isn’t an easy character to like but even at her worst, Jack Jordan’s nuanced, empathetic characterisation shines through and the harrowing truth that she is a mother without her child imbues every terrible choice she makes.
Tobias is the more obvious protagonist and, compelled to save his wife from herself, he is forced into behaviour he would never have believed himself capable of. However, Jack Jordan cleverly provokes readers into questioning whether his actions – or inactions – should mean he should also be held culpable for the tragedy of almost Shakespearean proportions which develops here.
The storyline is told through the perspectives of Evelyn, Tobias and Aaron himself and as the tension inexorably builds towards the inevitable denouement, we learn more about the young man who left a child to die on a desert road. Aaron is not the same man who went into prison but he has been unable to escape the wretched town which, however brutal, is the only home he has ever known. As the narrative switches between the three, Redemption becomes a pulse-pounding cat-and-mouse chase which is as heartrendingly poignant as it is exciting.
With its graphic sense of place throughout, Redemption is an unsparingly nerve-shattering thriller with some shockingly dark scenes; it is also a soul piercingly exploration of guilt and grief, and is Jack Jordan at his very best. I tore through the pages and thoroughly recommend it.
About the Author
Jack Jordan is the global number one bestselling author of Anything for Her (2015), My Girl (2016), A Woman Scorned (2018), Before Her Eyes (2018) and Night by Night (2019). His thriller, Do No Harm, was an instant Times bestseller and shortlisted for the Most Recommended Book in the DeadGood Reader Awards. Coined the thriller of the summer for 2022, it was described as “relentlessly tense” by Sunday Times Bestseller Lesley Kara, and “Chilling and perfectly paced” by New York Times Bestseller Sarah Pearse. The idea for Do No Harm came to Jack after undergoing a minor medical procedure where he had to be sedated and trust strangers with his welfare. After the anaesthesia wore off, Jack began scribbling his notes, wondering to himself just how iron-clad a surgeon’s oath is, and what it would take to break it…
Conviction, was published in June 2023 and featured in Cosmopolitan’s ‘best new books out in June’ round-up, it was also chosen as one of the June featured books by Magic Radio’s Book Club and the audiobook was selected for Fingerprint Award at Capital Crime 2024.
His most recent book, Redemption was published in June 2024.
