Midday Nowcast: Gradual Clearing Today; Severe Storms Expected Saturday Night : The Alabama Weather Blog

A gradually clearing sky today as drier air moves into the state. Temperatures this afternoon are in the low to mid 50s for much of North and Central Alabama; portions of the Tennessee Valley will remain in the 40s today. Tonight will be clear and cold with upper 20s and lower 30s.

BIRMINGHAM ALMANAC: For February 13th, the average high for Birmingham is 59° and the average low is 38°. The record high is 83° set in 1962, while the record low is -10° set in 1899. We average 0.17” of precipitation on this date and the record value is 3.33” set in 1945.

SWEET AND SEASONABLE VALENTINE’S DAY: Tomorrow will be a dry and sunny day with afternoon highs in the upper 50s; right where they should be this time of year. Weather will not be an issue for any plans you may have for you and your Valentine.

WEEKEND STORMS: A very dynamic system will bring the threat of strong and severe storms back to Alabama Saturday night. The SPC has defined a severe risk for all of Alabama, with an “enhanced risk” (level 3/5) for the western counties of the state for Saturday and Saturday night. This includes areas in and around Tuscaloosa, Hamilton, Japer, Fayette, Demopolis, and Thomasville. A “slight risk” (level 2/5) covers the rest of Alabama.

On Saturday, a warm front will surge northward making for a warm and breezy day as temperatures rise into the 70s. There could be a few isolated storms during the afternoon hours across the state as the air becomes more unstable, but the main severe weather threat looks to arrive late Saturday night and into the predawn hours Sunday, as an organized line of fast moving strong and severe storms. The wind fields with this system will be very strong, and storms along the line could produce damaging straight line winds along with a few isolated tornadoes. For now, the main window for severe storms in Alabama will come from 6PM Saturday-6AM Sunday. Understand the timing and threats are likely to change as we get closer to the event.

Rain amounts will likely be in the 1 to 2 inch range for most of the state.

The sky gradually clears Sunday with highs in the 50s. Sunday night lows will fall into the 20s across much of North and Central Alabama. A freeze is likely for much of the state again Tuesday morning. Then another widespread rain event will move into the state on Wednesday as a Gulf low develops. With the low to the south of us, there will be no threat of severe weather. In fact, this feature could bring some wintry precipitation (mostly light snow) to Tennessee and southern Kentucky and that could sneak into portions of North Alabama Thursday, but way too early to know if there will be potential impacts.

Another surge of colder air moves into the state after the mid-week rain and temperatures look to be below average for several days.

WORLD TEMPERATURE EXTREMES: Over the last 24 hours, the highest observation outside the U.S. was 116.8F at Ballera Gas Field, Australia. The lowest observation was -58.4F at Vostok, Antarctica.

CONTIGUOUS TEMPERATURE EXTREMES: Over the last 24 hours, the highest observation was 95F at Harlingen, TX. The lowest observation was -38F at Linton, ND.
