Follow Your Soul & Restore Balance — Sara Kabariti

I’m honoured to introduce you to Sara Barjakly, an art psychotherapist and 200 HR Vikasa certified yoga teacher. Her passion for art and movement led her to combine her yoga practice with group art therapy. Her unique approach aims to help individuals cultivate courage, connection, and a sense of grounding while also letting go in a non-judgmental environment.

Can you tell us a little about art therapy?
Art Therapy is a form of psychotherapy and falls under the umbrella of Arts Therapies. It uses the process of art-making to explore emotions and feelings and encourages self-expression. The primary emphasis with this type of therapy is the focus on the process of art-making rather than only on the end product or result.

What made you pursue this career path?
Having graduated with a degree in Fine Arts, I discovered my calling in educational environments, where I have had the privilege of working with adolescents and children. It was heartwarming to observe how the art-making process became a universal language that resonated with everyone in the classroom. As someone who has always been passionate about wellness, obtaining a certification in Art Psychotherapy enabled me to combine my love for art and my desire for meaningful interaction in a truly beautiful and fulfilling way. In my latest endeavor, I am exploring the powerful fusion of yoga and art therapy.

What are the benefits of this form of therapy?
Art therapy offers a wide range of benefits to clients based on their unique needs. Some of the key advantages of this type of therapy include:

  • Facilitating a deeper understanding and articulation of emotions and feelings.

  • Providing a safe space to release pent-up tension, stress, and emotions that may have been stagnating.

  • Boosting self-esteem and self-awareness, while strengthening social skills.

  • Helping alleviate physical symptoms associated with pain.

  • Enhancing overall mental and emotional well-being.

How does it compare with other alternative approaches to health and wellness?
Art therapy is a dynamic and inclusive approach that caters to individuals of all abilities, creating a shared language that extends beyond words. The art-making process serves as a powerful medium that transcends barriers and fosters authentic communication and self-expression. Art therapy promotes self-discovery and personal growth.

In what ways can art therapy enhance a person’s life?
Art therapy offers a wonderful opportunity to promote overall well-being by providing a safe and supportive outlet for emotions, stress, and other feelings that may be weighing individuals down. Rather than bottling up these emotions, art therapy allows for their release and recognition in a non-judgmental environment.

Who is art therapy for?
Art therapy is for everyone. Despite common misconceptions, seeking therapy does not necessarily always mean struggling with mental health concerns.

In fact, even a single session of art therapy can provide a multitude of benefits, such as promoting feelings of calmness and upliftment, and helping to release physical tension. Furthermore, art therapy is offered in a variety of settings and can benefit a wide range of individuals, from those with dementia or chronic illnesses to special needs and even prisoners.

Do you have to know how to paint to begin art therapy?
Art therapy sessions extend far beyond just painting. Clients are given access to an array of art mediums, from pencils and paints to clay, collage and sand, allowing them to freely explore their creativity without any prior artistic skills. In this safe and judgement-free space, clients are encouraged to use the art materials openly and freely within the sessions.
