<\/a><\/p>\n(Beth Clifton collage)<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n COLUMBUS,\u00a0 Ohio\u2013\u2013<\/strong>The fourth fatal pit bull attack on a baby in less than four weeks on April 9,\u00a0 2025 raised the U.S. dog attack death toll for the year to 22.<\/p>\n The pit bull mauling death of seven-month-old Eliza Renee Lynn Turner in Columbus,\u00a0 Ohio came two days after Marion County,\u00a0 Ohio prosecutor Ray Grogan announced on April 7,\u00a0 2024 that the Marion County Grand Jury had brought first degree felony charges of involuntary manslaughter, \u00a0child endangering, and reckless homicide against Blake Bates,\u00a0 29, and Alyssa Smith,\u00a0 35,\u00a0 parents of six-month old Royal Wayne-Jackson Bates, \u00a0killed by their pit bull Kilo on April 28,\u00a0 2024.<\/p>\n (Beth Clifton collage based on Facebook photos)<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n Pit bulls named Kilo,\u00a0 Kane,\u00a0 and Kash were impounded on April 9,\u00a0 2025 from the home of Kameron Turner,\u00a0 25,\u00a0 and MacKenzie Copley Turner,\u00a0 23,\u00a0 after the death of their daughter Eliza Renee Lynn Turner.<\/p>\n Kameron and MacKenzie Turner had apparently also had a pit bull named Kloe Kenzie Kenzie as of 2019,\u00a0 whom they called their \u201cbaby\u201d in a Facebook photo caption before the 2020 birth of their first child,\u00a0 Elijah Douglas Max Copley.<\/p>\n Eliza Renee Lynn Turner was their second child.<\/p>\n Baby Elizah Renee Lynn Turner.<\/strong><\/em> \u201cColumbus police and Franklin County Animal Control responded to the incident just before noon,\u201d\u00a0 reported Bailey Gallion for the Columbus Dispatch<\/em>.<\/p>\n \u201cColumbus fire Battalion Chief Jeffery Geitter said a woman knocked on the door of fire station #22,\u201d\u00a0 several blocks north,\u00a0 \u201cwith the severely injured baby girl.<\/p>\n \u201cThe girl was taken to Nationwide Children\u2019s Hospital and was pronounced dead at 11:43 a.m., \u00a0a police dispatcher said.<\/p>\n \u201cPolice are not sure which dog was involved in the attack,\u201d\u00a0 Gallion concluded.<\/p>\n Parents of baby Elizah Renee Lynn Turner, Kameron Turner & Mackenzie Copley. (Facebook photo)<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n Kameron and MacKenzie Turner had only just bought the house where the attack occurred on April 3,\u00a0 2025,\u00a0 according to property records.<\/p>\n The house,\u00a0 at the corner of South Champion Avenue and Allison Drive,\u00a0 backs up to Tina\u2019s Home Childcare on the Allison Drive side,\u00a0 a daycare facility in business since 2000.<\/p>\n Charges were not immediately brought against Kameron and MacKenzie Turner,\u00a0 but may be investigated,\u00a0 since both keeping three pit bulls in a home with two small children and bringing three pit bulls into proximity to a day care center could be considered reckless behavior.<\/p>\n Left to right:\u00a0 Blake Bates,\u00a0 baby Royal Wayne-Jackson Bates,\u00a0 & Alyssa Smith.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n Marion County prosecutor Ray Grogan told media that a year before Blake Bates and Alyssa Smith\u2019s pit bull Kilo killed Royal Wayne-Jackson Bates, \u00a0Kilo attacked a neighbor\u2019s child.<\/p>\n \u201cWhen you have a dog in any instance that demonstrates aggressive behavior towards a human being, \u00a0you have to take steps to either put that dog down or ensure that the dog isn\u2019t going to have access to do real harm to somebody, \u00a0particularly a child,\u201d \u00a0Grogan stated.<\/p>\n \u201cWhen you don\u2019t do that, \u00a0there are consequences,\u201d \u00a0Grogan added.<\/p>\n (Beth Clifton collage)<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n While Blake Bates and Alyssa Smith\u2019s pit bull Kilo was euthanized after the death of their son,\u00a0 the couple are believed to have kept from three to six other pit bulls in their home during the next year.<\/p>\n Bond for Alyssa Smith was set at $50,000;\u00a0 bond for Blake Bates was set twice as high,\u00a0 at $100,000,\u00a0 reportedly because Bates was already incarcerated for unrelated felonies including \u201cstrangulation,\u201d \u00a0a third degree felony, \u00a0during a domestic violence episode.<\/p>\n Bates was further charged with \u201cescape\u201d on February 26, 2025,\u00a0 also a third degree felony,\u00a0 for trying to evade the domestic violence charge.<\/p>\n Alyssa Smith, Blake Bates & family.<\/strong><\/em> Marion County assistant prosecutor Mark R. Weaver on April 7,\u00a0 2025 told Law & Crime<\/em> that Royal Wayne-Jackson Bates had been left in the care of his eight-year-old sister in the family\u2019s living room while Blake Bates was outside and Alyssa Smith was in the bathroom,\u00a0 possibly showering.<\/p>\n Royal Wayne-Jackson Bates rolled from a sofa to the floor.\u00a0 Kilo killed him before the daughter could call her parents.<\/p>\n The circumstances somewhat resemble those of the March 14,\u00a0 2025 pit bull mauling death of six-month-old Ember Rene Southard in Alabaster,\u00a0 Alabama.<\/p>\n (See\u00a0Three defendants,\u201d\u00a0 the Marion County prosecutor\u2019s office said in a prepared statement.\u00a0 \u201cThe case will be heard by Common Pleas Court Judge Todd Anderson. \u00a0Each of the defendants faces up to 11 to 16 \u00bd years in prison if convicted on all counts.<\/p>\n \u201cAnyone who lives in the Miami Street area and has information about previous aggressive behavior of the Texas,\u00a0 meanwhile,\u00a0 Danielle Henderson, \u00a034, \u00a0was on April 10,\u00a0 2025 sentenced to serve six years in prison and make restitution to Max de Los Santos,\u00a0 78,\u00a0 who lost both of his legs after Henderson\u2019s pit bull and German shepherd mauled him on August 15,\u00a0 2023.<\/p>\n Reported Jordan Elder for News 4 television in San Antonio,\u00a0 \u201cHenderson said she did not recall getting a letter from the city regarding her dogs being aggressive, \u00a0but admitted that they got out three times on the day of the attack. \u00a0The third time was when they escaped near the front of the house and attacked De Los Santos.<\/p>\n \u201cHenderson\u2019s attorneys asked the judge to consider her four children as he made his decision, \u00a0saying the public safety issue has been resolved because the dogs have been euthanized and Henderson has moved.\u201d<\/p>\n Shannon Sims was then director of San Antonio Animal Care Services.<\/strong><\/em> The court was not having any of it.<\/p>\n Reported Mariza Mendoza,\u00a0 also of News 4 television in San Antonio,\u00a0 two months after the attack,\u00a0 \u201cWe\u2019ve been investigating the case since and found the two dogs were reported to the San Antonio 311 number the day before the attack. \u00a0A family friend says the attack could have been prevented if Animal Care Services or ACS responded to the call.<\/p>\n \u201cThrough an open records report, \u00a0we discovered a 311 call was made on August 14,\u00a0 2023 \u00a0by a neighbor,\u00a0 one day before De Los Santos was attacked on his in my back yard.\u201d<\/p>\n Resumed Mendoza,\u00a0 \u201cThrough our research of the dogs\u2019 owner, \u00a0we discovered San Antonio Police & Animal Care Services have dealt with Danielle there is another fatality in the city,\u201d\u00a0 Walls predicted.<\/p>\n Ramon Najera,\u00a0 81,\u00a0 was fatally mauled in San Antonio on February 24,\u00a0 2023,\u00a0 in an attack by two pit bulls who likewise escaped from their yard,\u00a0 after multiple prior complaints by neighbors.<\/p>\n The owners of the pit bulls who killed Ramon Najera,\u00a0 Abilene Schnieder and Christian Moreno, both age 32,\u00a0 were on September 20,\u00a0 2024 sentenced to serve 15 and 18 years in prison,\u00a0 respectively, \u00a0after pleading guilty to dangerous dog attack resulting in human
