Some acts of kindness are also acts of magic.\u00a0 We just did one of those today.<\/p>\n

And, like almost all kind acts, it probably made us (the
\ndoers) feel just about as good as it made the receivers feel.<\/p>\n

It all started with the idea of a TREASURE CHEST.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/p>\n

And then it blossomed from there.\u00a0 <\/span>And boy<\/i> did it blossom.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/p>\n

My sister Sherry and I decided that we were going to
\ncreate a TREASURE HUNT<\/b>.\u00a0 <\/span>It
\nsounded simple enough, but the more we worked on it, the larger it became.<\/p>\n

We got a plain wooden box.<\/p>\n

Painted it black.<\/p>\n

Decorated it \u2013 and by decorate it I do mean DECORATE.\u00a0 <\/span>That box had bling to beat the band.<\/p>\n

Isn’t is so fancy??<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Then we got shells.\u00a0
\n<\/span>But not just any shells \u2013 FANCY SHELLS!\u00a0
\n<\/span>Our local beach doesn\u2019t have all that many shells, so we had to buy
\nthem.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Then we got JEWELS!\u00a0
\n<\/span>Rubies, pearls, and glass beads.\u00a0 <\/span>Soooo<\/i>
\npretty.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/p>\n

We wanted doubloons \u2013 pirate booty \u2013 but couldn\u2019t find
\nany.\u00a0 <\/span>So, my partner David MADE some, and
\nthey were fantastic!!<\/p>\n

We got necklaces, because all treasure chests have
\nnecklaces, right?<\/p>\n

We found a pretty feather on the beach \u2013 put that right
\nin the treasure chest, too.<\/p>\n

We got a small glass bottle to put a secret note in.\u00a0 <\/span>Only, regular paper for the note simply would
\nnot do, so we burned the edges to make it look rustic (it may have taken us a
\ncouple tries to get that right\u2026).<\/p>\n

Then we needed to make the TREASURE MAP\u2026\u00a0 <\/span>It was tricky \u2013 we wanted the hunt to be fun,
\nnot too easy, magical, and doable.\u00a0 <\/span>I mean,
\nwe wanted the kids to be successful!\u00a0 <\/span>Of
\ncourse, it too had to have burnt edges.\u00a0 <\/span>In
\nthe end our map told the treasure hunters to run 20 steps, splash 4 times in
\nthe ocean, shout \u201cAhoy Matey, I am on a TREASURE HUNT!\u201d, spin around 4 times, walk
\n10 steps in towards the dunes, draw a fish family in the sand, look for the \u201cmast\u201d
\nfrom a pirate ship in the water (one of the only remaining parts of the downed
\nship), find the blue \u201csail\u201d from the ship, and more.\u00a0 <\/span>And of course, the final clue told them that
\nX MARKS THE SPOT.\u00a0 <\/span>(Luckily, we had a
\nleftover stepping stone and some spray paint to make the perfect X.)<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Only we couldn\u2019t just hand a MAP to the hunters\u2026\u00a0 <\/span>It needed to be special!\u00a0 <\/span>We decided on a green wine bottle.\u00a0 <\/span>Perfect!\u00a0
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Only then, we needed a CORK\u2026\u00a0 <\/span>Quick trip to some neighbors solved that one.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/p>\n

We wanted to bury the chest, but we didn\u2019t want it to get
\nruined in the moist sand.\u00a0 <\/span>We decided to
\nwrap it in fabric.\u00a0 <\/span>But the fabric needed
\nto be rustic, too, so we dyed it with coffee.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Remember how I told you this project blossomed in
\nscope??\u00a0 <\/span>Believe me now?\u00a0 <\/span>We worked on this baby for 5 days!<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/p>\n

And today was GO DAY!\u00a0
\n<\/span>We headed to the beach to bury the booty.\u00a0 <\/span>David did the digging, and then made the sand
\naround the area look normal again.\u00a0 <\/span>We
\nplopped the X stone down and we were ready to go!!<\/p>\n

But how to choose the children to treat??\u00a0 <\/span>That was a tricky part!!\u00a0 <\/span>We knew we wanted:<\/p>\n

–\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>A kid or kids young enough to still believe in
\nmagic<\/p>\n

–\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Parents who would be ok with us involving their
\nkids<\/p>\n

–\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Parents or an older sibling who could assist in
\nhunt<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/p>\n

We looked around the beach a bit before finding a group
\nof 4 kids.\u00a0 <\/span>2 were young \u2013 probably 5 and
\n6, and 2 were older \u2013 probably 11 and 12.\u00a0
\n<\/span>When they were busy splashing in the water we checked in with the parents,
\nwho okayed our request.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Then we got to work!<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/p>\n

We put the green glass bottle into the water and then \u201cfound\u201d
\nit.\u00a0 <\/span>We walked it over to the kids and
\nexplained that this just washed up \u201cover there – near the mast\u201d (trying to help
\nthem with a clue they would soon see \ud83d\ude0a<\/span> ).\u00a0 <\/span>I
\nheld it out and asked the little girl if she would like to open it to see what
\nthe note inside said.\u00a0 <\/span>She shook her head
\nno, and I wondered if all of this work was going to be for naught\u2026\u00a0 <\/span>Maybe WE were the only ones who thought a
\ntreasure hunt sounded fun??<\/p>\n

Oh my- a note in a bottle?\u00a0 What might this be?<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

But then her older sister took the bottle, and the magic
\nbegan!!<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/p>\n

We walked away to let them hunt (and we settled into a
\nspot to watch!).\u00a0 <\/span>Oh, they were so
\ncute!!\u00a0 <\/span>They loved the green bottle.\u00a0 <\/span>One kid was filling it up with water as
\nanother read the note aloud.\u00a0 <\/span>They seemed
\nto take a while to read and study the note, but once they began following the instructions
\nthey were all in!\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/p>\n

They RAN the 20 paces!<\/p>\n

They hollered \u201cAHOY MATEY, WE ARE ON A TREASURE HUNT!\u201d
\nwith glee.<\/p>\n

They spun around 4 times (that part made me smile \u2013 they were
\nvery committed!).<\/p>\n

They splashed as instructed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

They found the \u201cmast\u201d in the water.<\/p>\n

They walked the required number of paces towards to dune.<\/p>\n

Then they started looking for the blue sail\u2026<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Oops\u2026\u00a0 <\/span>Another
\nfamily had a blue sunshade set up, and that was a bit of a red herring.\u00a0 <\/span>They went to the sunshade and stood in front
\nof the unsuspecting family \ud83d\ude0a<\/span> .\u00a0 <\/span>We
\nwaved from a distance until they saw us, then pointed UP to the blue \u201csail\u201d we
\nwere standing under.\u00a0 <\/span>And they came
\nrunning!<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/p>\n

On the way to the \u201csail\u201d they hunted for the X that was marking
\nthe spot.\u00a0 <\/span>They were looking in the sand
\nfor it and luckily, the tiniest girl spotted it and squealed.\u00a0 <\/span>They rushed over, lifted the X stone, and the
\nlittle one knelt down and started digging with her hands.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/p>\n

We hadn\u2019t buried it too deep (we weren\u2019t sure if the
\nhunters would have a sand shovel or not).\u00a0
\n<\/span>After moving away some sand she was excited to see the fabric, which we
\nhad tied closed with twine.\u00a0 <\/span>She grabbed
\nan end of the twine and untied it, then pulled the fabric and box out of the
\nhole.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Those gems decorating it shone brightly in the sun.\u00a0 <\/span>It was so pretty!\u00a0 <\/span>They RAN back to their parents with the box
\nstill sealed and quickly plopped down on the sand to see what treasures awaited
\nthem.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Oh, they looked excited!\u00a0
\n<\/span>They dug through the shells and gems and necklaces and coins.\u00a0 <\/span>It was so sweet!\u00a0 <\/span>They found the little bottle inside with
\nanother note.\u00a0 <\/span>After they had examined it
\na while, the 3 biggest girls went back into the ocean (the smallest of the 3
\nnow sporting a necklace from the chest).<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the youngest treasure hunter kept digging thru
\nthe bounty.\u00a0 <\/span>So.\u00a0 <\/span>Many.\u00a0 <\/span>Things!\u00a0 <\/span>Then she had the brilliant idea to dig a hole
\nand re-bury everything \ud83d\ude0a<\/span> .\u00a0
\n<\/span>After a bit of swimming she returned to dig it all back up again, show
\nher mom a very special shell inside, and put on a necklace to adorn her
\nswimsuit.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/p>\n

Oh my goodness this was a fun project.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/p>\n

It took a ton of time.<\/p>\n

It took a lot of effort.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/p>\n

But it made us feel like kids again and I think it really
\ndelighted the children involved.\u00a0 <\/span>I can imagine
\nthat littlest girl starting school on Monday, ready for show and tell.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/p>\n

We have not added up the receipts yet to see how much
\nKindness money was spent making this magic happen, nor do I know how many hours
\nwe painted and glued and giggled and created.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/p>\n

But it was all worth it.\u00a0
\n<\/span>Because it was time and money well spent to create magic and spread
\nkindness.\u00a0 <\/span>It gave us a purpose on some
