Identifying Lefton vs. Norcrest and Topline Imports<\/h2>\n

Collectors often confuse Norcrest and Topline Imports with Lefton bluebirds. This happens because manufacturers produced them during the same era with very similar designs. For instance, the Norcrest China Company began in Japan in 1953 and created playful, brightly colored birds.<\/p>\n

In contrast, Topline Imports usually feature a simpler, elegant design with a distinct matte finish. While many pieces lack permanent marks, you can often identify them by their specific stamps. Lefton pieces typically feature a \u201cLefton\u201d stamp, whereas Norcrest uses a \u201cNorcrest\u201d mark. Meanwhile, Topline Imports frequently relied on paper labels or foil stickers that collectors may find today.<\/p>\n

One reason why collectors confuse these three types of bluebirds is that they were all produced during the same era and share similar design features. Additionally, many of these bluebirds were not marked with identifying information, making it difficult to determine their origin.<\/p>\n

However, there are some key differences between these three types of bluebirds that can help collectors identify them. The most recognizable vintage bluebird manufacturer is Lefton. Lefton bluebirds are high quality and beautiful. George Zolton Lefton who was a Hungarian sportswear designer founded the Lefton Company. <\/p>\n

The History of Lefton China<\/h2>\n

George Zolton Lefton, a Hungarian sportswear designer, founded the most recognizable manufacturer in this niche. He started the Lefton China Company in 1939 in Chicago, Illinois. Although the company produced everything from dinnerware to Christmas decor, the items made between 1945 and 1960 remain the most collectible.<\/p>\n

Because Lefton contracted with Japanese factories, many authentic pieces bear the \u201cGeo Z. Lefton\u201d stamp alongside a \u201cMade in Japan\u201d foil label. Consequently, these Japanese-made items have become highly desirable in the modern market.<\/p>\n

Other vintage bluebird manufactures include Norcrest, ESD, Relpo, Artmark, Ucagco, Napco, and PY, and then there are ones that are not marked but usually made in the same time period of the 1950s-1960s in Japan. \u00a0<\/p>\n

You can find these cuties as teapots, bowls, figurines, teabag holders, wall plaques, eggcups, cookie jars, coin banks, planters, sugar jars, jam jars, creamers, and more.<\/p>\n

As with any collectibles, price varies on condition, demand and scarcity. Today these are a very sought after collectible so be prepared to pay top dollar. A pair of Lefton Bluebird Salt and Pepper shakers can go between $125-$200, a Lefton bluebird butter dish can fetch $250-$275, Bluebird wall plaques complete set can easily go for $275-$325 depending on scarcity and condition. Ebay and Etsy are still the best places to buy these cuties as the selection tends to be vast because of sellers from around the world. It is not often you will find Bluebirds at antique shops or flea markets but if you do then snap them up!!<\/p>\n

Essential Tips for Collecting Vintage Bluebirds<\/h2>\n

When you are hunting for these treasures, you must inspect them closely for common flaws. First, check the bird\u2019s beak and wings, as these areas chip easily. Next, examine the inside rims and lids of teapots or jam jars for hidden damage.<\/p>\n

Additionally, look for cracks around the necks and tails of figurines. If your bird features rhinestones, like those found on Norcrest shakers, ensure all the embellishments remain intact. Finally, watch out for \u201ccold paint\u201d wear, and ensure that previous owners haven\u2019t painted over any dings or flea bites.<\/p>\n
