India marked Samvidhan Divas (Constitution Day) with the unveiling of Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar’s bust at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the unveiling of a bust of India’s first law minister, Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar, at the UNESCO headquarters, calling it a fitting tribute to him and his role in the making of the Indian Constitution.

“It is a matter of immense pride that today, on Constitution Day, a bust of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar was unveiled at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris. This is a fitting tribute to Dr. Ambedkar and his role in the making of our Constitution. His thoughts and ideals give strength and hope to innumerable people,” he said on X.

The Permanent Delegation of India to UNESCO marked Samvidhan Divas (Constitution Day) on Wednesday with the unveiling of Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar’s bust at the UNESCO Headquarters. The bust was unveiled by Vishal V Sharma, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of India to UNESCO.

The unveiling was done in the presence of Khaled El-Enany, Director-General of UNESCO and Ambassadors and diplomats of more than 50 countries, UNESCO officials and members of the Indian community in France.

On this occasion, the message of PM Modi was read out, paying tribute to Dr Ambedkar’s visionary leadership and reaffirming India’s commitment to constitutionalism and inclusive progress, according to a statement by India’s Permanent Mission to UNESCO. A video message from Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis was also played. highlighting Ambedkar’s global intellectual legacy.

“Ambassador Sharma underlined Dr Ambedkar’s transformative contributions to equality, education, democratic values and social justice – principles that echo deeply within the UNESCO’s own constitutional vision. He noted that this installation honours the life of a global thinker whose journey continually illuminated the emancipating power of education,” India’s Permanent Mission to UNESCO said in a statement.

The Constitution of India, drafted by Ambedkar, was formally adopted on November 26, 1949, marking a foundational moment in India’s post-independent history that is commemorated as Samvidhan Divas. It came into effect on January 26, 1950, which is celebrated as Republic Day.
