]]>Soak all the dals together for at least 3 hours. After soaking, drain the water well.
Grind the dals along with cumin seeds, whole coriander, black pepper, green chili, and ginger to a coarse paste without adding any water.
Transfer the mixture to a bowl. Just before frying, add salt and chopped spinach, as both release water. Mix everything well.
Shape the batter into small patties.
Heat oil in a frying pan over medium heat. To check if the oil is ready, drop a small amount of batter into the oil, it should come up slowly.
Gently drop the patties into the oil without overlapping. Fry until they turn golden brown and crispy on all sides.
Remove and place on a paper towel to absorb excess oil.
Serve hot with chutney or enjoy with a cup of tea.
I also like to serve them with a spicy yogurt cilantro dip. For the dip, use thick yogurt and add chopped cilantro. Prepare a quick seasoning with cumin seeds, asafetida, crushed dry red chilies, and curry leaves, then mix it into the yogurt for an extra burst of flavor.
Do try them and share how you like to enjoy your pakoras

Yes, you can use a single dal like moong or masoor, but the mix of dals gives the vadas a better texture and richer flavor.
Avoid adding water to keep the batter thick. A thick, coarse batter helps make the vadas crispy and prevents them from absorbing too much oil.
Fry them on medium heat and avoid overcrowding the pan. Also, make sure the batter is not too wet—this helps achieve a crisp texture.
Yes, you can air-fry or bake them for a healthier version, but the texture will be slightly different and less crispy compared to deep frying.
The batter is best used fresh, but you can refrigerate it for up to 1 day. Cooked vadas can be stored in the fridge for 1–2 days and reheated in an oven or air fryer to regain crispiness.

]]>Snacks are essential to fueling children throughout the school day, but finding snack ideas for kids that are uncomplicated and guaranteed to please is no easy feat. You might spend a lot of time making something you’re sure they’d like, only to find it still in their lunchbox when they get home. And then in that case, you end up eating it!
Luckily, the snacks that kids end up preferring tend to require few ingredients and little prep time—and they tend to be ones that adults like, too. It’s hard to go wrong with classics like quesadillas, fruit leather, and mini muffins. These typically only use a handful of pantry staples you probably already have on hand, along with a spare 10 minutes or so to prepare. Squeezing these tasty extras into your meal prep routine will be no sweat.
Instead of hunting down recipes on your own, we’ve done the work for you. Keep these 18 snack ideas for kids in your back pocket the next time you’re not sure what to make. With adventurous options such as roasted chickpeas and spicy popcorn as well as mainstays like meat and veggie wraps, this list contains options that kids of all ages—and the adults who are prepping for them—are sure to love.

Bars like these can be decked out with all of your kids’ favorite things—chocolate, nuts, dried fruit—and they take way less time to make than energy balls. In most cases, all you have to do is blend everything in a food processor and then press it into a baking sheet. Once it’s ready, simply cut it up into grab-and-go bars and pop them in your kids’ lunch bags.

It’s hard to find a kid who doesn’t enjoy quesadillas. Ooey-gooey cheese and toasted tortillas—what’s not to like? If your child has a sweet tooth, there are even sweet varieties that are both tasty and nutritious, like this one with peanut butter, strawberries, and banana slices.
The only downside to this snack is that it probably won’t still be hot when your kid finally digs in. Fortunately, most kids won’t even notice. Think about how great cold pizza is—adults know a few things about that! Cheese and bread will always be a winning combo, no matter the temperature.
Instead of sending your kid to school with one veggie to snack on, fill their lunchbox with a variety of options. They’ll be more likely to eat everything if there are a few different things to choose from. Paired with a great dipping sauce, they’ll be asking for this snack every day. Prep some extra; you’ll want to dip into this, too.

Have a leftover box of stale cereal? One of these tasty, kid-friendly treats will help you make use of it. Plus, your kids will be so excited to see their favorite cereal pop up in their lunchbox. And they’ll be amazed at how much better it tastes when combined with additional spices and flavorings.

Save leftovers of mac and cheese to make these ingenious and practical bites. Keep them in the freezer so you can easily add one or two to your kids’ lunchbox on their way out the door. They’ll be totally defrosted and ready to eat by the time the lunch bell rings, so there’s no need to worry about microwave access. Then take a few out for yourself mid afternoon to fight off a slump!

Try these with our favorite mac and cheese recipe!
These quick and tasty pizzas can be made in mere minutes and are infinitely adaptable to different tastes. You can keep it plain with cheese and tomato sauce for picky eaters. Or deck it out with toppings if that’s what your kids prefer. For younger children, feel free to swap out the tomato sauce for ketchup.

Older kids will appreciate a crunchy, savory snack like roasted chickpeas. But a couple of sweet spins may even convince younger kids to get in on the fun.
The possibilities are endless with meat and veggie wraps. They can be big and filled to the brim for a full and satisfying meal, or small and cut into pinwheels for a perfect kids snack.

These rice paper-wrapped rolls are packed with veggies and protein and are so fun for kids to eat. Though they can’t really be rolled ahead of time, you can cut all the veggies and mix up the sauce beforehand. That way, they’re quick and easy to throw together before the kids leave for school.

Once you realize just how easy it is to make fabulous, homemade fruit leather, you’ll never go back to store-bought. Some recipes require just two ingredients in total—just fruit and sugar—but you can always add spices and flavorings to kick things up a notch. Make a big batch at once so you always have some to put in your kids’ lunchbox.

If your kids enjoy Lunchables, then they might be more sophisticated than you realized. After all, those iconic pre-packaged meals are basically just charcuterie by another name.

In the words of Donkey from Shrek, everybody loves parfait! And that includes children. Skip the fruit-on-bottom store-bought versions because making your own is so simple and more affordable.

Mini muffins are both cute and small enough that they won’t get crushed in their lunch bags. And there are a bunch of both sweet and savory ideas to choose from!

This classic is a perfect snack idea for kids because it’s easy to make, easy to pack up, and guaranteed to please both simple and sophisticated palates. If they prefer it plain, then keep it that way! Otherwise, almost any spice or flavoring they enjoy can be added to great results. There are even dairy-free “cheesy” options for kids that struggle with lactose.

If getting your kid to eat fruit is an uphill battle, serving it in kebab form might finally change their mind. Cute, colorful, and tasty, who could resist? And you don’t have to cut them into stars, regular chunks would do just fine!

How to Choose Snacks Your Kids Will Actually Eat
The most useful snack strategy usually isn’t finding 50 more recipes.
It’s paying attention.
Notice what gets eaten, what consistently comes home, and which foods kids ask for again.
Instead of asking only, “Did you like your snack?” try something more open-ended:
“What was your favorite thing in your lunchbox today?”
Keep a simple running list of the answers.
Over time, you’ll build your own short list of reliable snacks—and that list is much more useful than any giant Pinterest board.
Probably less than you think.
You don’t need to prepare 18 different snacks or even seven different snacks every week.
Try choosing two or three options.
Maybe you make muffins for the freezer, portion some snack boxes, and keep fruit around.
That’s enough to make a noticeable difference.
One thing we come back to again and again at Workweek Lunch is that meal prep works better when it reduces decisions rather than creating more of them.
If making elaborate snacks every weekend starts to feel like another job, simplify.
Future you will be much happier grabbing a muffin from the freezer than realizing you committed yourself to making homemade fruit leather at 9 p.m. on a Tuesday.

School Snack Meal Prep Tips
A few small habits can make these snacks easier to manage:
Mini muffins, homemade bars, snack boxes, quesadillas, wraps, and some baked snacks are all good candidates for preparing ahead.
You can also save time by prepping ingredients rather than complete snacks.
Several options on this list, including muffins and some baked snacks, can be freezer-friendly depending on the recipe.
Freeze them in portions that are easy to grab so you don’t have to thaw the whole batch at once.
You don’t necessarily need an entirely new recipe.
Change one component.
For example, keep the same snack-box format but swap the fruit, crackers, dip, or muffin.
That gives you variety without starting from scratch.
Try packing smaller amounts and paying attention to which foods consistently get eaten.
It can also help to involve kids in choosing from a few available options.
You’re gathering information, not failing at lunch packing.
Absolutely not.
Store-bought snacks, convenience foods, and homemade options can all have a place in your routine.
Meal prep is supposed to make your life easier. If making every snack from scratch makes the week harder, it’s missing the point.
If you’re looking for more ways to make school-day food easier, check out:
It’s the snack that works.
If your kid happily eats the same muffin three times a week, you do not have to reinvent snack time.
If one week you make homemade bars and the next week you toss packaged crackers and fruit into a lunchbox, both can fit.
The best snack-prep routine is the one that makes school mornings easier, uses food your family actually enjoys, and doesn’t leave you spending your whole weekend in the kitchen.
Pick two or three ideas from this list and see what sticks.
That’s plenty.
Have a snack your kids consistently ask for? Share it in the comments—we’d love to add more real-life favorites to the list.

Step 1. Drain and rinse the chickpeas in a colander.

Step 2. Add the ingredients except the chocolate chips to a food processor. Grind, to make a smooth texture. Remove the blade. Stir in the chocolate chips.

Step 3. Press the batter into the prepared pan, spreading evenly. Bake until the edges are lightly golden brown.

Step 4. Remove from the oven and cool completely. Slice into bars and drizzle with additional melted chocolate chips if desired.

You can make these bars with a nut-free option like sunflower seed butter, which has a slightly different taste but works well in this recipe.
Each bar has 3 grams of protein and a nice dose of healthy fats, too.
Each bar has 5 grams of protein from the chickpeas and peanut butter, which is a nice bonus in a bar that tastes as good as the ones from the grocery store.

Store for up to 2 weeks in an airtight container in the fridge. You can also freeze the bars in a zip-top bag for longer storage.
