Gamers start movement on Steam against AI-made games

Artificial intelligence is becoming more prevalent in gaming, but many Steam users are voicing their dissatisfaction with its use. In a discussion on the platform’s suggestion forum, players are calling for a filter that indicates whether a game incorporates AI.

The concern is straightforward: players worry that AI could negatively impact game quality and threaten the jobs of artists, developers, and other professionals. By implementing such a filter, they hope to avoid purchasing AI-generated content and send a message to the gaming industry that this technology is not welcome.

Steam already offers several filters, allowing users to identify games with adult content or compatibility with specific accessories. The request is for a similar feature that highlights titles created using AI-generated assets.

Though Valve has not officially addressed the issue, the discussion has gained significant traction within the community. The forum thread has already amassed 45 pages and over 650 responses, with the majority supporting the proposal.

Beyond concerns about job security and game quality, players also argue that AI could lead to an influx of unfinished projects—games that experiment with AI-generated content but lack depth or polish. However, opinions vary, with different users expressing their own reasons for opposing AI in gaming.

One user summed up their frustration by stating they want games crafted by skilled professionals, not rushed AI-driven projects designed solely for profit.

“I don’t want to play a game that no one wanted to do. I want to play things that were done by people who really love what they did, ”asks one of the users in the Steam forum.

AI use in games

As many are aware, the use of AI is a controversial topic both inside and outside the gaming industry. AI models are often trained in a somewhat “mysterious” way, using content created by professionals across various platforms, including social media, YouTube, and more.

In gaming, however, the conversation has largely moved in favor of AI. Companies like Electronic Arts, Embracer Group, and Square Enix have already explored its use in some of their titles. The latest to confirm AI integration is Activision, with Call of Duty, as well as the director of Inzoi, a game set to launch on PC in March.

Still, not everyone believes AI will revolutionize gaming. Take-Two Interactive’s CEO, Strauss Zelnick, has expressed skepticism, stating that AI won’t bring the significant industry-wide transformation that some studios expect.

With the growing pushback from players, studios, and developers may start reconsidering their stance on AI in games. Right now, the main demand from the community is for Valve to introduce a filter on Steam—ensuring greater transparency regarding AI usage in game development.
