The Gnomon Workshop has released Dynamic Cloth Simulation for Production, a guide to professional character effects, recorded by Untold Studios Senior CFX Artist Salah Hussein.
The workshop, which sets out how to make a 3D character’s clothing dynamic using cloth simulation, provides over four hours of video training in Houdini.
An essential guide to character effects workflows for animation, VFX and cinematics
In the workshop, Hussein sets out his professional workflow for simulating an animated character’s clothing and props using Houdini’s Vellum solver.
He begins by converting layers of cloth from the character asset into efficient proxy geometry, then sets up a constraints network that makes it easier to fine-tune or debug the simulation.
After setting up the Vellum solver and refining the sim, Hussein demonstrates how to export the data cleanly, preserving the original geometry without changing any attributes or topology.
As well as the tutorial videos, viewers of the workshop can download Hussein’s Houdini Indie project files, and Alembic simulation caches.
