Death in Paradise S 14: A New PO in Town

Season 14 episode 3/2 of of Death in Paradise sees a new Police Officer, PO, join the team in the town of St Marie. This “Pineapple Boy” is the replacement for the murdered officer who was to start as the new PO. The new officer is learning that he has big posthumous shoes to fill. Meanwhile, the new DI Wilson is learning more manners from Darlene. He, however, more respectful of his number 2, DS Thompson.

Death in Paradise Episode 2

A new reality competition show; Island Warrior, is being filmed on the island. The winning contestant is on the zipline zooming down to success. However, when he lands, someone has stabbed him to death, apparently while still zipping down the mountain.

DS Thomas and Darlene learn, to their chagrin, that Wilson is now the new Honore DI.

Mervin soon learns that another Police Officer had been interviewed before the late Officer Brice. The commissioner passes this information on and the Inspector has to take the “not hired” officer on.

The mystery

Someone stabs the “winner” Johnny while he’s on the zipline. This happens when he is out of sight of the camera. At the scene, the two detectives find a knife and what looks like a pearl. The team are working out how the contestant was murdered in mid-air.

Pineapple Boy

It is now Sebastian’s turn to learn. He first learns that his new “probationary” boss is not impressed by Seb’s work. Darlene, however, senses that he may well be a diamond in the rough. DS Thomas has not put her two penneth worth in yet but it seems like she agrees with the other two team members.

Seb manages to “lose” some vital evidence. He does figure out how to track it down though. These extra efforts go a long way toward solving the case.

DI Wilson

The new Detective Inspector is still learning. He is picking some things up though, despite annoying Commissioner Patterson enough for the man to yell at him. Wilson does smooth these troubled waters and he starts investigating his mother’s death in earnest.

One Issue

The mystery this week was not up to scratch with previous murders in the series. Wilson may well have the old “gather the suspects” drill together but it all seemed too cut and dried. There was no last minute switch here at all. We can only hope things get that bit more convoluted in future episodes.

the verdict

Death in Paradise has kept its shaky 4.75 stars this week. That murder on offer just squeaked into palatability but, in the future, we need to have those ultra tricky kills to solve. Season 14, and all the previous seasons, are available on Britbox.
