Why Use a Surface Skimmer

A surface skimmer can be a valuable tool for both freshwater and marine aquariums. Today, we’re taking a closer look at the Sicce Shark Mini Skim 350, available in both the standard and plus versions.

A surface skimmer is a useful device for both freshwater and saltwater tanks. Often overlooked, it plays a crucial role in maintaining water quality. Its main function is to remove the oily film that forms on the water’s surface, known as biofilm. But why is this so important? Let’s dive into it—right after the video.

Let’s get to know this interesting device better in our in-depth video! We’ll unbox it, set it up, and explain why it’s essential for your aquarium. Choose English subtitles.

The Problem with Biofilm

Biofilm consists of oils, proteins, organic debris, and other substances that tend to accumulate on the water’s surface. This layer is not only unsightly but also hinders gas exchange between the water and the atmosphere. In simple terms, biofilm can reduce oxygen levels in freshwater aquariums and prevent CO₂ from escaping, potentially harming aquatic life.

The Sicce Shark Mini Skim 350 is a surface skimmer designed to tackle this issue. It comes in two versions: the standard and the plus models. The difference? The included magnet:

  • Mini Skim 350 – suitable for glass up to 6mm thick.
  • Mini Skim 350 Plus – suitable for glass up to 12mm thick.

The number 350 refers to the skimmer’s flow rate—350 liters per hour.

How the Shark Mini Skim 350 Works

Technically, it consists of a pump block with an overflow outlet, on top of which the reaction chamber is placed, containing the blue sponge provided. The rotating section of the skimmer sits above this. It may sound complicated, but it’s much easier to understand when you see it in action.

Take a look at the first image of the article for a clearer view of the general assembly. In the photo above, you can also see the mechanical pre-filter sponge, the flow adjustment dial to adapt to your tank’s needs, the powerful magnet on the back, and the adjustable water outlet nozzle in the front.

Sicce Shark Mini Skim 350 Technical Specifications

Here are the technical details of both versions:

Included components: top grid and outlet nozzle to direct water flow.

This is particularly useful in freshwater tanks, where small fry could accidentally get sucked into the skimmer. The grid helps prevent this from happening. The skimmer is quite small, so keep that in mind when looking at the images.

Benefits of the Sicce Shark Mini Skim 350

  1. Removes Biofilm: The Sicce Shark Mini Skim efficiently sucks in the water’s surface layer, eliminating biofilm and improving gas exchange. This is especially important in freshwater aquariums, where lower water movement and the lack of overflow systems can result in lower dissolved oxygen levels.
  2. Improves Water Quality: By removing organic waste before it decomposes, the skimmer helps keep the water cleaner and more stable.
  3. Enhances Aesthetic Appeal: A clear water surface reflects more light, improving lighting efficiency and enhancing the colors of fish, plants, and corals in a saltwater tank.
  4. Supports Filtration: By complementing the main filter or protein skimmer, the surface skimmer helps maintain a healthier environment for fish, corals, and plants.

Conclusion

The Sicce Shark Mini Skim 350 is a smart investment if you struggle with surface film—whether in a freshwater or marine aquarium. Regardless of what’s causing the biofilm, this affordable and compact skimmer can effectively solve the problem.
