Sakamoto Days Episode 01 Review: The Legendary Hit Man

Sakamoto Days, is based on a manga series of the same name by Yuuto Suzuki. It tells the story of Taro Sakamoto, who after falling in love, retires from being a hitman. He gains weight, and begins running a convenience store.

When a former partner, the clairvoyant Shin appears, Sakamoto’s is dragged backed into the hitman world. Shin wants him to return. Sakamoto refuses. Sakamoto’s skills haven’t suffered in his time away from killing. Instead he’s kept them sharp doing chores for the town people.

After visiting his old boss, Shin leaves disappointed. It turns out he was sent to kill Sakamoto for leaving the hitman organization. Shin returns the next day to finish the job. When Shin enters the store Sakamoto responds quickly.

Sakamoto verses Shin

Sakamoto easily overwhelms Shin. Using the “tools” he has at his disposal, Sakamoto blocks a bullet with a cough drop, then uses them like bullets with the help of a rubber band. Despite his size, Sakamoto is quick on his feet. He’s able to move silently and quickly. On top of all that he seems to possess superhuman strength. He knocks Shin out.

After sharing a meal with Sakamoto and his family, Shin comes to understand that what Sakamoto was protecting and why he needed to retire.

Shin returns having failed to kill his former boss. However, Shin isn’t good enough to kill Sakamoto anyway. His current boss isn’t pleased. Shin begs his boss to leave Sakamoto alone. Shin admires Sakamoto too much to kill him and is even willing to sacrifice himself instead. When the boss orders Shin dead, it’s Sakamoto that comes to his rescue.

Sakamoto verses the hitmen

Having been eavesdropping on Shin he hears the gun fight. Sakamoto reveals that he’s been keep an arsenal weapons in the convenience store. Shin meanwhile is able to hold his own against the gang using his clairvoyance. Suddenly, Sakamoto appears. Using chopsticks, he stops bullets. He overwhelms them without much effort. Shin decides to leave but Sakamoto offers him a job at the store.

Sakamoto Days Episode 01 introduces us to an interesting protagonist. Taro Sakamoto is the strong silent type. Despite his size he’s still lethal. We don’t get much on his family other than they’re clearly unaware that he was an assassin and they’re adorable. Shin is a bit of an asshole, constantly calling Sakamoto “fat”. However, he does have a sweet side and is willing to sacrifice himself for others. The animation isn’t the best I’ve seen but it’s not bad either. The action on the other hand is great.
