Snowfall In Rome 1

In 1985, on January 6, Romans woke up to find their city transformed by a rare snowfall, with 20 cm of snow blanketing the streets.

From the Colosseum to St. Peter’s dome, and from the Spanish Steps to Navona Square, the Eternal City lay hidden under a soft white cover that extended even to its outskirts. Schools and shops were closed, and both Romans and tourists ventured outside, turning the snow-covered city into a festive wonderland. Children who had never seen snow were mesmerized, while adults joined in the fun, sledding around the Colosseum and even attempting cross-country skiing along Via Condotti. Snowball fights broke out across the city, from the Spanish Steps to the Trevi Fountain, where snowballs replaced coins for the day, creating an unforgettable, magical moment frozen in time.
