“Living in the Shade”

NYCHA was built in the 1930’s thanks to Eleanor Roosevelt. They focused on vast outdoor spaces that were better than many public and private places in the city. Some apartments were so lovely that people wondered why public housing was so well done. Of course, that was in 1937; not much has been done since.

The exhibition “Living in the Shade” was funded in part by the Public Housing Community Fund and Bloomberg. This exhibit shows the history of where NYCHA began and where we hope it is going.

NYCHA faces a debt of over $80B to fix the repairs, aging apartments, faulty elevators, leaks, and outdated kitchens. The parks are the last thing in their budget, which is why the Community Fund focuses on raising private money to rebuild the parks and community centers, with resident feedback, so everyone works together.

Over the spring, the Community Fund will hold cocktail parties and dinners at different board members’ homes to inform more New Yorkers about what we are rebuilding and how they can get involved. If you are interested, please reach out.

“Living in the Shade” is free and open to the public by appointment until Feb. 27 at the FXCollaborative Gallery. To make an appointment, call (212) 627-1700. From March 27 to May 23, the exhibition will be shown at LaGuardia Community College.
