Nastiriff’s new offering “Bed By Seven” is about getting old, but not in that sad Bruce Springsteen kinda way where he’s singing about his time down by the river. No. Nastiriff stare down the barrel of youthful bravado, and the result is a catchy, upbeat reflection on the passing of time.
With a surprisingly danceable approach, the band showcase a new side to their sound, and we like it a lot. Imagine Queens of the Stone Age meeting early Kings of Leon, mixed in with the playfulness of The White Stripes for good measure.
But don’t worry, there’s still a healthy dose of straight-up crazy too. Vocalist Gavin Wilmers sings about a cat that does drugs, which, if you can believe it or not, is actually based on a true story. Wilmers reflects, “That felt like I’d grown up, nursing this cat back to health, because I’d never planned on being a parent. But the cat stumbled into my life, and when it needed me, I had to step up.”
With an accompanying visual that carries the band’s trademark red and yellow colour palette, some gnarly skateboard shots figure in the video as a symbol for life rolling on.
“Bed By Seven” is a gentle reminder to let life run its course. Or, as the band puts it, “This is a song for people to mosh and reflect on.” You couldn’t get more contrary if you tried, and that’s what makes it special.
