“RedCap is very attractive for customers seeking the rapid deployment of IoT applications that meet 5G requirements, but which must also consider cost,” said SIMCom sales director Mads Fischer. “Our new RedCap modules enable systems designers to get up and running quickly and easily.”

The module, called SIM8230 and measuring 30 x 30 x 2.5mm, is a multi-band 5G NR/LTE-FDD/LTE-TDD module which supports Release 17 SA (stand alone), and has interfaces including PCIe, USB2.0 and GPIO.

Its AT commands are compatible with the company’s earlier SIM7600/8200/8260 of devices, and it can deliver up to 220Mbit/s down-load/100Mbit/s up-load for sub-6G stand-alone, or 200Mbit/s down and 75Mbit/s up for LTE.

There are four versions for use in different regions.

Operation is over 3.3 to 4.4V, and -40 to +85°C.

Very little more has been revealed about the module. SIM8230 has a web page here, or talk to SimCom on stand B6.350 at Electronica in Munich today – which is the last day of the exhibition.

Founded in 2002, SIMCom has R&D centers in Shanghai, Chongqing, Shenyang, Shenzhen and Xi’an, and over 50 sales centres spread around the globe.
