American AAdvantage has just launched a new promotion for members. It’s possible that this is targeted, though it at least seems to be pretty widely available.
Earn 500 bonus AAdvantage Loyalty Points per segment
Nowadays Loyalty Points are the metric by which you earn elite status in the American AAdvantage program. You can earn Loyalty Points through a variety of methods, ranging from flying, to credit card spending. There’s now a new promotion offering bonus Loyalty Points for upcoming flights.
To find this offer, log into your AAdvantage account through aa.com or the American Airlines app, go to your main account page, and click on the “Promotions” tab. If eligible, you’ll see this listed there.

Specifically, there’s a promotion to earn up to 5,000 bonus Loyalty Points for upcoming flights, in the form of 500 bonus Loyalty Points per segment:
- Registration is required by March 31, 2025, and prior to booking flights
- This is valid for flights between March 1 and March 31, 2025
- All revenue fares, with the exception of basic economy fares, qualify for this promotion
- Flights need to be operated and marketed by American or American Eagle, and not by partner airlines
- Bonus Loyalty Points will post within 14 days of completing an eligible flight

Keep in mind that with the Loyalty Points system, the elite year resets on March 1 of each year, so this is being promoted as a head start promotion, to get an early start on status for the year. As a reminder, here are the current requirements for earning elite status with the program:
This is worth registering for, if eligible
Of course if you’re eligible and have any upcoming flights to book, then it’s worth registering for this offer and taking advantage of it. However, in terms of drumming up business, this seems like a really restrictive promotion:
- You have around five weeks to not only book travel, but also to complete travel, which really minimizes the potential usefulness of this
- The reward here isn’t huge, as we’re talking about just 500 bonus Loyalty Points per segment, so even if you completed 10 segments, that would get you 2.5% of the way to Executive Platinum
I appreciate in general that American is offering more promotions that are intended to encourage travel. However, I feel like there would be value in launching promotions that actually move the needle with demand and are lucrative, rather than just giving something away .
Bottom line
There’s a new (possibly targeted) offer whereby members can earn up to 5,000 bonus AAdvantage Loyalty Points for upcoming flights. This comes in the form of 500 bonus Loyalty Points per segment, for up to 10 segments, with all revenue, non-basic economy tickets qualifying. I wouldn’t say this is super lucrative, but it’s better than nothing.
Do you plan on taking AAdvantage of this Loyalty Points promotion? 😉
