Drink in These Super Bowl Beer Commercials

This year’s crop of Super Bowl commercials looks a little different. Instead of an onslaught of Bud and Bud Light, we saw canned cocktails and hard seltzers share the limelight. Here are the 2022 Super Bowl commercials about drinking, in no particular order.

Cutwater Spirits – Here’s to the Lazy Ones

Cutwater Spirits speaks to my soul with this one. As a dad, there are lots of times I’m too lazy – or too tired – to deal with making and cleaning up after a cocktail. That means it’s either whiskey neat or a canned cocktail. Always nice to have options.

Stella Artois – Make Time for the Life Artois

Swing and a miss for me. That’s pretty standard when it comes to Stella Artois commercials, though. Their ads are typically meh. Like, “Hey… remember us? We have that cool chalice. OK, good talk. See ya out there.”

Stella Artois – The Stella Substitutes

This Stella Artois ad from the Super Bowl pre-game lands a little better, mostly because of the follow-up videos that show Eli Manning, Dan Marino, and Ryan Clark taking over people’s jobs. I’ve always assumed Eli could pour a beer, but Marino adding pizza-maker to his skill set is a win.

Bud Light Seltzer Hard Soda – Land of Loud Flavors

Guy Fieri is always a win for me. I saw this commercial as part of a focus group last year, and this is an improvement over the initial storyboard. I still absolutely hate the name Bud Light Seltzer Hard Soda. I get that the new product falls under the Seltzer brand, but hard soda and hard seltzer are two different things. At least they were smart enough to show it in a glass at the end – otherwise, I wouldn’t have known if it was going to pour clear or brown.

Bud Light NEXT | Zero In The Way Of Possibility

Brands should really stop bragging about having fewer carbs than their competitor when almost all light beers have single-digit carbs at this point. Kudos to Bud Light for trying to put an end to it by going straight to zero. And if you’re curious, like I was, Bud Light Next still has 4% ABV. Based on the commercial, though, it’s clearly meant for people cooler than I.

Budweiser – A Clydesdale’s Journey

After sitting out last year’s Super Bowl, Budweiser is back with a Clydesdale, a dog, and freedom. The premise is a weird flex given that it’s not uncommon for horses that suffer leg injuries to get put down regardless of their bravery. But hey, this horse made it. And he didn’t even have to have Batman’s butler standing over him asking, “Why do we fall?”

Michelob Ultra – Welcome to Superior Bowl

I like to think there’s a place where pro athletes can jgo and do normal stuff together – only better than the rest of us. It’s like how the fancy folks with verification checks on Twitter get a separate list of notifications just for other verified people. And if that place has a Big Lewbowski vibe and Donny aka Steve Buscemi behind the bar… that’s even better.

Michelob Ultra Organic Seltzer – Caddy

Hard seltzers continue their push for domination with Michelob Ultra seltzer hitting the big stage. I doubt Brooks Koepka cares about carbs or organic, but you don’t argue with your caddy. That’s rule number one. OK, so I’ve never had a caddy, but if I did, they’d definitely be smarter about golf than I am.

Michelob Ultra Pure Gold – Golden

I don’t know who Becky G is, but she’s apparently good at making music. I also don’t know what Michelob Ultra Pure Gold is nor do I need my beer to be organic. That said, I won’t turn down any cold beer.

And if you didn’t like this year’s Super Bowl commercials, you can always relive the glory of last year’s.
