I’m very excited to be sharing some of my favourite Middle Grade reads from the first half (ish) of 2024. This year has actually been quite a quiet year for me on the Middle Grade reads, I haven’t been reaching for them quite as much as I normally do. However I have definitely found some new favourites!

Paws by Kate Foster
I discovered this novel due to strong recommendations from a colleague at work! I would trust her word for everything now, this book is incredible. A lovely sweet story of a boy and his dog, featuring friendship and excellent autism representation!

Starminster by Megan Hopkins
I’m normally very sceptical of any middle grade book involving a magic boarding school (because you know why!) but this one is a unique and very interesting take. Astrid is invited to join a magical flying school above the skyline of London, where those with the ability to grow wings learn how to control it! It’s got friendships and adventure and it’s just a great magical novel!

I Am Wolf by Alastair Chisholm
One of my favourite books of the year, and the first of two mentions for Alastair, I Am Wolf is an awesome dystopian middle grade. What’s left of humanity live on giant robot creatures which fight each other for land and resources. It’s a real page-turner!

Reek by Alastair Chisholm
The second Alastair mention on the list, this is his most recent novel, published with dyslexia friendly publisher Barrington Stoke. This is a short and perfectly plotted dystopian novel set in a futuristic Edinburgh where due to pollution the air is no longer fit to breathe.
