Death in Paradise season 14 episode 5 trots out a killer on the footie pitch. But another “new” DI in town; Seb saves the day. Once again, it is Seb Rose for the win. His new thoroughness and over-the-top attention to every little detail, makes him a sure thing for eventual local Detective Inspector.
The story
The local football match offers up much more than team rivalries. There are a few players with personal grudges and a few other things at stake. After a confusing match moment or two, Ines Mercedes gets a red card. She leaves the match. Ines’ teammates find her dead body.
It seems there was a scholarship on offer. However, the cup final with the ejection of the first candidate to earn the scholarship, forces the judges to withdraw the offer.
Someone has shot Ines. There is no weapon and few real suspects.
DSI Thomas runs into an old flame. She and Emmanuel Warner were an item and they decide to have a dinner date and catch up on old times.
Seb continues his campaign of looking at everything for clues.

The mystery
The star player on the local team is found dead in the team’s changing room. She has been shot during the match, apparently, and bled out. Everyone was either on the pitch or watching the match. So who killed her and how did they manage it.
Seb has an ardent admirer and she inadvertently gives the new Police Officer a vital clue as to the whereabouts of certain things.
It all works
Seb is determined to become the best PO ever hired. Darlene learns from her protege’. DSI Thomas and her old boyfriend issues allows her the freedom to become more involved in the questioning of their only suspect; Grace.
There is still the problem of the Commissioner’s upcoming removal due to downsizing. Something that, according to the upcoming preview, turns out to be a lie. He is getting a replacement apparently. Downsizing my…foot.
*Kick-about was genius.*
Seb, once again, earns the MVP award for helping to solve this crime.
*Kudos for working in the slang “necking” into the script. Brilliant.*
The message in this episode? Three wrongs do not make a right.
And:
Keep an eye on Seb, he might just be the next new DI in town.
The Verdict
Death in Paradise manages to gain back some of the slippery scores of late. This episode bangs out a full 5 stars. This new confab approach to solving the crime at the last minute is spot on. Catch this one via Britbox on Thursdays.
