An Easy Breadsticks Recipe is a tasty addition to almost any meal! Made with a yeast dough, then proofed and baked after topping with garlic butter and Parmesan cheese.
These Homemade Breadsticks didn’t last long around here! I served them to my book club, then then Bill, AKA the picky hubby, devoured the rest single-handedly. Yes, I bet they’re as good as those popular Olive Garden Breadsticks.

Why You Must Make
- There’s nothing better than homemade yeast bread. The aroma as these bake in the oven will make your mouth water!
- They’re perfect for pizza night at home or to serve with any Italian entree like spaghetti or lasagna.
- Kids and adults will love these soft breadsticks.
- I served these when I hosted my book club this month and created an Easy Salad Bar at Home. They got rave reviews….a couple of friends asked where I bought them (best compliment I could ask for!).

Ingredient Notes
- Kitchen Staples – Sugar, All-Purpose Flour, Warm Water, Salt
- Dry Active Yeast – One package (.25 ounces). Check the expiration date before starting the recipe.
- Vegetable Oil – I keep canola oil on hand.
- Egg – Have at room temperature for easier incorporation.
- Butter – Melted. I use salted butter.
- Garlic Salt
- Parmesan Cheese – Use the real grated Parmesano-Reggianno, not the green can on the grocer’s shelves.
How to Make

Recipe Tips
- Make sure your yeast has not expired before starting the recipe.
- PRO-Tip: Use warm, not boiling water to proof your yeast. Very hot water will kill the yeast.
- PRO-Tip: The ideal proofing temperature is around 85°. Newer ovens will have a “proof” setting.
- If you do not like garlic, just brush your breadsticks with plain melted butter before dusting with Parmesan cheese.
Frequently Asked Questions
I found this recipe submitted by Kandilynn on All Recipes and she said they are very close to Olive Garden’s breadsticks. I haven’t tried their version, so I can’t confirm!
They go great with any Italian entree like lasagna, spaghetti, or ravioli. I made these for my book club and served them with a do-it-yourself salad bar. They’d also be delicious with a bowl of soup.

- 1 (.25 ounce) package active dry yeast
- 1 cup warm water, divided
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 3 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 1 egg
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ cup butter, melted
- ½ teaspoon garlic salt
- ¼ cup Parmesan cheese
Instructions
- Dissolve 1 ½ teaspoons sugar and yeast in ½ cup warm water in a bowl. Let stand until the yeast softens and begins to form a creamy foam, about 5 minutes.
- Beat flour, oil, egg, salt, remaining sugar, and remaining warm water into yeast mixture until smooth, adding more flour if needed to form a soft dough. Turn the dough onto a floured work surface; knead until smooth and elastic, 6 to 8 minutes.

- Grease a baking sheet.
- Punch the dough down and turn it onto a floured work surface. Divide the dough into 16 pieces and shape each into a 6-inch rope.
- Arrange dough pieces on the prepared baking sheet about 2 inches apart; cover with a towel or plastic wrap and let rise until doubled in size, about 25 minutes.
- Preheat the oven to 400°. Remove cover from dough.
- Bake in the preheated oven until golden brown, 10 to 12 minutes.
- Whisk butter and garlic salt together in a bowl; brush over each breadstick. Sprinkle Parmesan cheese over each.
