

For nearly a year, two astronauts have been living an unexpected adventure aboard the International Space Station (ISS), but their long-awaited return to Earth is finally imminent.
Barry Wilmore and Sunita Williams, who originally traveled to the ISS in June 2024 aboard Boeing’s Starliner capsule for a test flight, found themselves stranded due to technical malfunctions that rendered their spacecraft unable to complete the return journey.
Now, after an extended nine-month stay in orbit, they will finally make their way home aboard a SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule.
The Unexpected Delay
Wilmore and Williams were supposed to spend only a few weeks in space as part of the Starliner’s test mission, which was meant to assess the new spacecraft’s performance before it could be certified for regular crewed missions. However, persistent technical issues, including helium leaks and problems with the spacecraft’s thrusters, forced NASA and Boeing to repeatedly delay their return. Initially, engineers hoped to resolve the issues while the astronauts were still aboard the ISS, but as the months passed and no immediate solution emerged, an alternative plan was required.
With the Starliner deemed unfit for their return, NASA made the decision to bring Wilmore and Williams back aboard a SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule that had been docked at the station since September 2024 as part of the Crew-9 mission.
However, there was one major logistical hurdle—Crew 9 needed replacements before they could depart, and those replacements had yet to arrive. As a result, the two astronauts were forced to remain in space, becoming full-fledged members of the ISS crew.
A New Role on the ISS
During their unexpected extended mission, Wilmore and Williams were fully integrated into the daily operations aboard the ISS. Rather than remaining as guests awaiting their return trip, they contributed to ongoing scientific research, maintenance tasks, and even spacewalks. Their presence helped to support the ISS’s busy schedule of experiments, ranging from biological studies to materials research and technology demonstrations that could impact future deep-space missions.
Despite the challenges of an extended stay, the two astronauts maintained their professionalism and adapted to their new circumstances. The delay, while frustrating, provided them with a rare opportunity to experience a long-duration space mission—something they had not originally trained for in this particular instance.
The Arrival of Crew-10 and the Journey Home
The key to their return was the successful launch of the SpaceX Crew-10 mission, which finally took place from the Kennedy Space Center. This mission not only delivered fresh supplies but, more importantly, brought a new team of astronauts to relieve Crew-9 and allow for a crew rotation.
The new team aboard the ISS now consists of Russian cosmonaut Kirill Peskov, JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) astronaut Takuya Onishi, and NASA astronauts Nichole Ayers and mission commander Anne McClain. With their arrival, Crew-9—along with Wilmore and Williams—can now prepare for their long-awaited journey back to Earth.
A Historic and Unexpected Mission
The prolonged stay of Wilmore and Williams highlights both the challenges and resilience required for human spaceflight. Although their mission did not go as planned, they adapted to the situation and contributed to the ISS’s operations while awaiting a safe return plan.
