It’s been reported in the press that Mr. Trump acknowledges to being a germaphobe and prefers his food from fast food restaurants because he says he knows what he’s getting. But is that what we wish to teach our kids?
Here’s a different lesson.
There is a food camp for young kids ages 9-14 that’s hosted by two university county cooperative extension agents in New Mexico. According to the article, these area kids experience directly what a variety of farms are really like and witness first-hand where their food comes from.
Shaylee Cordova, 9, of Belen remarked, “I learned that out of a 1,300-pound cow, only one cup of fluid is not used,” said Adrian Rodriguez, 14, of Los Lunas.
Another youth commented after visiting a flour mill built in 1914, “I liked all of the machines, especially when they were running.”
As we generally want for our kids a better life than we will have as parents, this is a healthy step in that direction.
A golden arches sign may tell us something but not where our food comes from.
