Over 300 local Wimmera residents and supporters met at the foot of Dyurrite/Mount Arapiles, Victoria on Sunday 20th of April for the Shared Not Shut Vigil.

The Shared Not Shut Vigil was an opportunity for people to come together and show their love and connection to Dyurrite. Through wild winds, rain, and mist, people shared their stories and love for the park, while local rock climbing legends Louise Shepherd and Simon Mentz addressed the crowd. They spoke about the importance of the mountain to the local and climbing communities. The public reflections acknowledged the stories and experiences of everyone, including Traditional Owners, and was a moment of compassion, respect, and community.

What is the issue at Dyurrite/Mount Arapiles?

Restrictions on outdoor recreation, in particular rock climbing, have been introduced without comprehensive public consultation or evidence. This has resulted in closures that impact local communities, businesses, and outdoor enthusiasts. Regional towns such as nearby Natimuk rely on recreational tourism, and the organisers of the vigil say restrictions are having significant economic and social impacts.

Other areas around Australia that are facing similar restrictions include Gariwerd/The Grampians, VIC, Wollumbin/Mount Warning, NSW, and Kati Thanda/Lake Eyre, SA.

Does this campaign support the protection of Aboriginal cultural heritage?

Shared Not Shut wants to work in partnership with Traditional Owners to advocate for decision-making that’s fair and balanced. The group’s goal is for laws to be fairly applied and for decisions to be made based on evidence and in consultation with all stakeholders.
