From Pleinair to Studio Painting

SIZE CHANGES EVERYTHING

The Pleinair below was featured in a blog a few weeks ago, and I got quite a few inquiries about purchasing it, so I panicked! Typically, I use these small studies to paint a larger piece and eventually sell them, but I wasn’t ready to part with this pleinair just yet. Anyway, I quickly looked around my studio for a bigger canvas, but only had a 20″x 24″, so I used that. I did have a photo of a blooming Dogwood tree, but nothing of the exact scene I had painted. Halfway into the new version, I realized, once again, that when painting in a larger format, the composition will change as well! The flowers do not grow incrementally as big as the tree, and the pond behind takes on an abstract quality. Therefore, while the smaller version is intimate, the larger size has almost an Oriental or Contemporary quality. I wonder what it would look like if it were 30″x 40″ or maybe square, 36″x 36″? Hummmmm.
