Vegas’s Story

Vegas is a large juvenile, green sea turtle, who was found stranded in a creek near the Steinhatchee River in Dixie county on Jan. 4. This area experienced extreme flooding during Hurricane Helene, and now that the waters have receded, many marine animals are now trapped in this area. Vegas is in good body condition and has a minor case of fibropapilloma. We are hopeful for a quick turnaround!

Treatment Updates

1.5.25

The area that Vegas was found in was brackish and low salinity water. We will be monitoring Vegas’ electrolytes over the next few days due to this exposure and giving appropriate fluid therapy. Vegas was given a small amount of swim time and did well!

1.8.25

Vegas is able to be in deep water all day and overnight! Their electrolytes have returned to normal values.

1.9.25

Vegas has received a clean bill of health from our staff veterinarian.

All marine turtle footage taken in Florida was obtained with the approval of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) under conditions not harmful to marine turtles. Footage was acquired while conducting authorized conservation activities pursuant to FWC MTP-23/24-172.
