Our partnership began from an email that Animal League America Board Member, National Spokesperson and Foster Parent Beth Stern received from the organization in Afghanistan, which she passed along to our rescue team. “After looking into it, we determined this was something we could definitely help with,” recalled Sylvia Ottaka, Animal League America Senior Director of Rescue & Community Outreach Programs. “We worked closely with them to see who we could rescue, and identified 26 cats we were able to take in. Some had been rescued from the outdoors, others were surrendered or given up when their family moved out of the country.”
KSAR, led by Charlotte Maxwell-Jones, has grown into a vital resource in Afghanistan since its start in 2018. What began as a personal effort to help stray animals has evolved into a formal veterinary clinic and rescue organization. Their dedicated team focuses on tackling overpopulation and neglect, aiming to create a cultural shift toward compassion for animals.
