I’m on LinkedIn – What’s Next?

In the past, Jennifer Wilson wrote I’m On LinkedIn – Now What? and she and I teamed up to update the article in late 2024. What we didn’t address, though, is what’s next – especially the strategic advantage that AI, specifically ChatGPT, brings to the table when elevating your profile and presence on LinkedIn. This post will explore what’s next with LinkedIn.

Before you scroll straight to the strategies, we should all first reflect on Samantha Mansfield’s blog, Don’t Be Afraid! It’s Time to Give ChatGPT a Try, that includes some considerations for getting started with ChatGPT and my four basic non-negotiables for using AI:

  1. AI is NOT always right. AI learns from what it is trained on. So, if the AI was trained incorrectly, with bias, or incomplete information, the information or output you receive from the AI tool will be incorrect, have bias, or be incomplete. Garbage in, garbage out still applies.
  2. Verify AI output with reliable sources. I’m an older Millennial and the daughter of a Media Specialist which means I want sources to ensure the data is valid and when I work with AI my prompt always includes “cite your sources.” But, we can’t stop there. Instead, we must evaluate the data sources using the CRAAP test. Consider also transparently noting if YOU had help from AI with something you create or produce.
  3. Don’t share or plug in personal or sensitive information. Once it is out there, it is out there.
  4. Don’t just copy and paste. AI is a robot; you are NOT a robot and you could be plagiarizing. Use AI to help you generate or brainstorm, not to blindly write content for you. Add your voice and personality, bring your true self to YOUR LinkedIn profile and presence and never plagiarize.

Now that we’ve centered-up on some basic “rules of the road” when it comes to AI, let’s jump into some ChatGPT LinkedIn strategies!

Use AI to Update Your Profile

Listen, there are a plethora of articles sharing the importance of completing your profile, keeping it up to date, and writing a “a compelling headline” or “detailed about section.” But, often it can be difficult to generate or brainstorm the necessary information to get to 100% and current. If you have LinkedIn Premium, try the LinkedIn AI profile writing assistant. If you don’t use LinkedIn Premium, you can still use an AI tool, like ChatGPT, to draft or improve your headline or about section.

  • Need a prompt for your Headline? Try:
    • Write a LinkedIn headline for a CPA/Title who specializes in niche/service, with support from my LinkedIn profile as a resource: [Insert LinkedIn profile link]. Ensure the headline is concise, grabs attention, and is professional.
  • What’s next? Tell ChatGPT to ask you questions so the output captures your personality and creates a more accurate headline. Try:
    • Before I ask you to rework my LinkedIn headline [Insert LinkedIn profile link]. Ask me three questions that will help you write a confident, compelling headline with CPA/Title and niche/service.
  • Need a prompt for your About section? Try:
    • I have X years of experience in service/niche. Before I ask you to write my LinkedIn About section that is informative and professional, what 5 questions do you have for me?
  • What’s next? Run your new Headline and About paragraph through Grammarly – even the free version gives you access to their generative AI tool that can help you improve your writing based on the desired voice or tone of the writing.

Don’t forget about your Experience section!

The LinkedIn Experience section is set-up and read similarly to a resume. But, it doesn’t have to be a dry list of organizations you worked for and skills gained. Instead, tap into this overlooked section and use AI to re-write your Experience section to tell your story and elevate your personal brand.

  • Need a prompt? Try:
    • I’d like to rewrite my Experience section on my LinkedIn profile [Insert LinkedIn profile link]. I will provide you with details on my current role, Rewrite the description so it uses action verbs, showcases my unique contributions, and includes keywords for SEO. Here are the details on my role: insert current description or details on your role.
  • What’s next? Save your LinkedIn profile as a pdf by selecting Resources on your profile and Save to PDF. Navigate to NotebookLM (a Google AI product that is helpful for summarizing content) and upload your LinkedIn Profile PDF. Then, try this prompt:
    • As a LinkedIn expert with a focus on business development and networking, provide suggestions for improvement for the Experience descriptions for the profile content provided. Your suggestions should improve clarity, credibility, and tell a story about the roles, especially in industry/service/niche.

Expand your network (but don’t be spammy!)

No matter the number of connections on LinkedIn or how active you are (or aren’t) on LinkedIn, I’m sure you’ve experienced the random LinkedIn InMail (direct message) with an unsolicited sales pitch, demo, or job offer. So, as you are building your network (and “vampiring” your connections from others’ connections), leverage ChatGPT to create personalized messages that will help you stand out.

  • Need a prompt? Try:
    • Write a warm and professional connection request to a Title in service line/niche who posted about
    • Write a LinkedIn connection request to someone I have never met but we share LinkedIn connections and have experience in
  • What’s next? Examine the potential connection’s LinkedIn headline, summary, experience, and how you are connected and add those details to your ChatGPT prompt:
    • Write a professional, concise LinkedIn InMail introducing me to title in service line/niche. Here is their LinkedIn profile: [Insert LinkedIn profile link].

Relevant content creation

Just like you can use AI to help you elevate your profile, you can also use it to help you brainstorm and draft relevant copy content. Asking AI to draft your content can significantly save you time and increase your visibility, but remember – always review, fact-check, and edit to include your voice!

  • Need a prompt? Try:
    • Provide me with 4 engaging LinkedIn posts about TOPIC providing any citations to the data or information you provide. The posts should be no longer than 3 sentences and should keep my ideal client in mind: enter ideal client characteristics with industry and service/niche.
  • What’s next? If you have a paid version of ChatGPT, navigate to “Explore GPTs” in the sidebar. In this section, you can find custom GPTs that have “extra knowledge.” Search for “LinkedIn” and a variety of LinkedIn GPTs will show up. Give Viral LinkedIn Post Formatter a try by taking your draft post and asking it to “match the viral examples” or edit your post for “better engagement.”

“A picture is worth a thousand words”

Having a picture attached to your LinkedIn post increases your engagement but finding the “perfect” picture that conveys the idea clearly and accurately can be difficult. So why not try asking AI for help?

  • Need a prompt? Try:
    • Create a professional picture that conveys message you are trying to communicate. The image should be in square, landscape format and include colors, fonts, logo. The image should be a realistic photo, cartoon, illustration, or stock photo with permission to use at no cost and include the text: your text here.
  • What’s next? If you are really lacking inspiration and have no direction whatsoever for your image, take advantage of ChatGPT’s custom GPTs and search for Canva. Then, hold a quick conversation with Canva GPT about what you are envisioning or use one of their custom prompts and let Canva GPT guide the design by answering questions. Be warned, at the time of this blog’s posting, Canva GPT is fairly new and can require extra editing or design on your part.

LinkedIn continues to be one of the top business to business (B2B) social media platforms with four out of five members driving business decisions. It is a business development tool that you can’t ignore – and I hope these AI strategies help you elevate your presence and expand your network.

Until next time,

Emily
