Celebrate Earth Day with Troon Amphora Mourvedre

Troon Vineyard is located in the beautiful Applegate Valley in southwest Oregon.

Earth Day 2025
Each year, Earth Day reminds us to think about our activities and to take action to lessen our environmental impact. One of the big environmental factors in daily life is our choice of food and drink. We can opt for organic products and producers, eat more fresh local foods, and eat the foods we purchase, wasting less. When it comes to wine with dinner, Troon Vineyard is an easy, earth-friendly choice. Troon has been on a multi-year journey to produce fine wines while actually improving the environment. They are Regenerative Organic Certified at the highest level, meaning they are certified organic and employ a wide variety of practices to capture carbon in living soil. The Troon Vineyard website goes into detail on all their practices, which expand each year.

“Our vision since the beginning is to produce the exceptional, individualistic wines in a regenerative way that gives back to the earth. We are hoping to bring an even greater focus on these practices to help spread the word and, in turn, help heal the earth one farm at a time — farm like the world depends on it,” says Troon General Manager Craig Camp.

Troon Vineyard Amphora Mourvedre Applegate Valley 2022 (sample, $65 from the winery) 13.5% abv
Eye: Medium Ruby
Nose: Medium plus aromas of violets, just ripe blueberry, blackberry, black plum, subtle leather and forest floor
Mouth: Dry, medium-plus acidity, medium-plus refined tannins, medium-plus body, medium-plus flavor intensity, medium plus finish. Flavor follow the nose with additional hint of anise and black pepper.
Observation: A very nice red wine with solid fruit in its youth, it will gain complexity with additonal time. Fine to drink now, but save a few if you have more than one.

Earth Day Dinner with Troon Vineyard Mourvedre
We paired the Troon wine with a lamb chop (côtelette d’agneau here in France) and roasted vegetables on a splash of romesco sauce. The lamb, vegetables and ingredients were all organic and local. The Troon Amphora Mourvedre was a very nice pairing with our dinner as it had lively acidity with pure flavors that didn’t overpower the food. In France, cheese comes after the main dish and is enjoyed with the remaining wine from dinner. We liked the wine best with the Comté and the Tomme de Brebis du Larzac (sheeps milk). The Saint-Marcellin was nice but would be better with a white or light, fruity red.
