In Zoiy G. Galloay’s “Wind that Blows from Nowhere,” book 1 of the Elemental Mage Pentalogy, a young Air Mage decides to fight for her parents’ justice after they are murdered by a deceitful murky secret organization.

Alisio Skylor gets apprehended while eavesdropping on a meeting conducted by Cer, an official from the Wolkarian Society who ruthlessly murdered her parents. With tears in her eyes, she asks him why he treated them that way when all they did was show him kindness. Cer responds that they were caught planning a genocide against the minority elementals in Brisote. Knowing full well that she will seek revenge, Cer proceeds to inform her of his carefully thought-out plot to kill her. This also, he says, will serve to ensure that the specifics of their meeting—such as the imminent invasion of the royal family’s palace—do not leak.

It turns out that Alisio’s parents were battling against a secret society that tricked people into thinking they were open-minded social justice activists. Once persuaded, the latter are willing to falsely accuse and extort others who hold opposing opinions. Individuals born into the Wolkarian society and brainwashed to defend its cult philosophy make up its first tier while individuals like Cer belong to the second stratum; those who have been promised power, fortune, and high-level positions. Despite prioritizing her own safety, her determination to reveal his scam and other malicious schemes brings her to Eden. Her first hurdle, however, is determining how to approach royalty.

The novel immediately immerses the reader in a fantasy world of profound secrecy and heartbreaking revelations. Using characters from the elemental Mage races that dominate the land- Air, Fire, Earth, Water, and Aether- the story is filled with questions, mysteries, and occurrences that leave one wondering how they get along. A young heroine is introduced, and she immediately wins the reader’s compassion and likeability owing to her ability to control her emotions against the person she least expected to harm her parents. She alters the course of events and adds a new layer to the story by saving a prince during a conference, all while reminding readers that fate may be highly inscrutable.

“Wind that Blows from Nowhere” by Zoiy G. Galloay is a thrilling teen/young adult read that begins and concludes with dramatic events and high notes. The reader is consistently engaged by its action-packed, fast-paced scenes and thoughtfully designed settings. The antagonist’s obscurity is expertly used by the author, particularly in the unexpected conclusion and a new storyline that leaves one eager for the next installment. This work will appeal to young fantasy, romantasy, and dystopian readers who appreciate strong adolescent heroes and heroines.
