Celebration Time!. Our daughter and now son-in-law, who… | by Dave Cronin aka VinoViews | Jun, 2025

A big jug of Pimms was made and consumed pretty quickly, a few bottles of Rebellion Lager, some Chablis and a special bottle of Hunter Valley Semillon, more about this later.

I love lager but this kind of left me wanting, as much as I love Rebellion beers this just tasted like a generic British Lager.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s still better than your run-of-the-mill supermarket offerings, but put it up against a German or Czech lager and there’s no comparison.

It’s crisp and refreshing but a little too much bitterness for me, almost like a West Coast IPA

Wow, this was very good!

My daughter bought it for Father’s Day and ended up drinking it with me .

Very pale in colour, heady smokey aromas, with rich over ripe fruit. there’s some oak and is noticeable but not overdone, lots of citrus fruits mixed with peach and stewed pear.

Honeyed and a hint of some bitterness, still with some bright acidity giving it a nice fresh taste.

Enjoyed this a lot as did my daughter.

Now the star of the show, well, as far as I’m concerned, although it divided opinion around the table.

This was a bottle I bought years ago and been saving it for a special occasion, but to be honest, I forgot about it.

Just look at the colour in the glass, that’s what come with with 20 years of age and it still tasted somewhat fresh and youthful.

Lots going on flavour-wise, it was intense, tingly and full-bodied, honeyed, marmalade, toasted nuts, citrus peel, butterscotch, fruit had faded a little but this turned into something much more interesting .

Akin to a rich Chardonnay, slightly oily (lanolin) and still with some zippy acidity, this was one to sip and savour.

As I said earlier some loved it, others not so much, perhaps it turned into something too different for them, it wasn’t your normal run of the mill wine, for me this ended up a complex and utterly delicious white wine.

I feel this could have aged for a for more years yet, but what better occasion to open it than to celebrate my daughter’s wedding.

***Oh by the way, the Pizza oven was superb, what a great piece of kit, fabulous Pizzas were made all night, quick and easy to use, who needs a barbecue!
