One of these options includes the subway system, which runs through the different parts of the city, from the Bronx, Manhattan, Queens, to Brooklyn. Folks who need to commute daily to work will often choose to live in a neighborhood that has an NYC subway stop which directly connects to work. During the last month, we spent time going over the various 4, 5 and 6 train stops and neighborhoods along those particular green lines. Today, we’re starting up with the red 1, 2, 3 lines by discussing the express MTA 3 train stops and the best neighborhoods to live in on this route.
There are a total of 15 stops in Manhattan, and 19 stops in the borough of Brooklyn for the 3 train route. Unlike the 1 or 2 route, the 3 train route starts and ends in Harlem and does not extend further into the Bronx. Best Manhattan neighborhoods along 3 train stops
Sugar Hill
Located just 2-3 blocks away from the Harlem-148 St Street stop is the small sub-neighborhood of Sugar Hill located in Hamilton Heights. At just three avenues wide and ten streets tall, this neighborhood is one of the smallest in the city. Due to its plethora of historical buildings, this neighborhood has been deemed a National Historical District. Some notable buildings here include the Garrison Apartments at 435 Convent Avenue, which is one of the oldest and continuously operated Black founded, owned, and managed co-ops in New York City. The neighborhood is mostly residential with a few restaurants and businesses open to local residents.
Central Harlem
The neighborhood of Central Harlem is so large that multiple 3 train stops exist within the neighborhood itself. The particular stops that residents can access include the Harlem-148 St, 145 St, 135 St, 125 St, 116 St, and 110 St-Malcolm X Plaza. This means that commuters have plenty of options when considering where to live within Central Harlem. Residents of this neighborhood consider it an affordable option to the rest of Manhattan and love it for the locals’ strong sense of community and deep historical connections to African-American culture.
West Village
This wonderful neighborhood can be accessed by commuters of the 3 train line via the 14th St stop. The neighborhood can get pricey and inventory here moves fast, however, residents who manage to snag a apartment here can enjoy a plethora of great restaurants, shops, and bars. The West Village does get busy though, so it isn’t for folks who want a quieter way of life. However, it’s tree-lined avenues does make for a very picturesque and unique New York City living experience.
Best Brooklyn neighborhoods along 3 train stops
Brooklyn Heights
One of the first neighborhoods as you enter Brooklyn, is the neighborhood of Brooklyn Heights. Commuters can access the neighborhood at the stops of Clark St and Borough Hall. This neighborhood is highly desired for it’s close proximity to the water and is home to a number of beautiful parks that line the Brooklyn Bridge waterfront such as the Brooklyn Bridge Park, the Pier Two Roller Rink, the Pier Three Lawn, Pier Four Beach, Pier Five Park, Pier Six Flower Field, along with others. It’s a great neighborhood for commuters who want easy access to a lot of great outdoors in the city of New York. Not to mention, a long list of delicious restaurants.
Crown Heights
Crown Heights can be easily accessed by commuters from three separate stops on the 3 train line. You can get off at any of the following stops at Franklin Av-Medgar Evers College, Nostrand Av, Kingston Av, and Crown Heights-Utica Av. The neighborhood itself is beautiful with tree-lined streets and residents will have easy access to a number of great cafes and restaurants.
