Crunchyroll will launch the new post-apocalyptic comedy series Nyaight of the Living Cat on July 6, with new episodes streaming every Sunday in North America and other regions in which the service is available. Sony Pictures Entertainment is distributing in Japan and some parts of Asia.
The tongue-in-cheek series, adapted from the manga by Hawkman and Mecha-Roots, is produced by animation studio OLM (Pokémon; The Apothecary Diaries), and executive directed by Japanese film icon Takashi Miike (Ichi the Killer, Audition, 13 Assassins). Tomohiro Kamitani (animation director, One Punch Man; key animator, Hunter x Hunter) is directing the series.
A new subtitled trailer has been released:
Per the synopsis: “Run! The adorable cats are here. In 20XX, the world is dominated by cats. A virus which turns anyone who touches a cat into a cat has spread into a worldwide nyandemic. Cats rub against people, turning them into cats. Can humanity fight their urge to pet cats to survive in this cat-ridden world?”
The third and fourth episodes of the series have been announced as an official selection of this year’s Fantasia International Film Festival, held in Montreal, Canada in July, and will world premiere at the festival before streaming on Crunchyroll and broadcasting in Japan. Additionally, an early screening of the first episode will happen at Anime Expo in Los Angeles on July 3 on the Crunchyroll Stage in the JW Marriott.
