In the time since her solo debut with Do Not Move Stones (INNI, 2021), Australian pianist & composer Rose Riebl brought her music to a variety of audiences around the world from sold out shows at home and in Europe, documentary soundtracks such as the Emmy award winning Harley and Katya (2023), and an opera commission not mention a smattering of singles, covers, and an EP. We can now add a second full-length solo album to the list with the release of Dust.
I love silence. I love how ‘silent’ contains the same letters as ‘listen’. I love switching everything in the house off and feeling the energy shift and air still. We live in a world that’s increasingly loud and fast and stimulating but the silent wonder in collecting stones and flowers with my daughter is unmatched.

Once again, Riebl shows her mastery of the piano as an instrument of deep personal expression while widening her musical canvass to include guitar, drums, brass, and vocals as she explores themes of grief and loss as well as stillness and joy. Commensurate with such a range of emotions, the songs on Dust can be intimate and tender or they can suddenly surge and cascade with tidal energy. Wherever they fall on the emotional spectrum, however, they are all beautifully arranged, uplifting, and poignantly heartfelt.
This song carries my whole heart. It was written for a young woman who took flight, and passed to the other side. It was written for my brother, (I want you to come home). It was written dreaming a daughter I didn’t know I would have. It’s written as a bridge to our shared humanity: we sing, we dance, we cry, we love.
