Day 2 – Red

plain text in alt text.

Vantared

Mariana's eyes don't work well
so when she asked me to explain
what the color red was like
it took me a moment.

she's always such a good listener
and so I want to do her request justice.

I laid back
tilted my head up to look at the riftia
which I guess she took as refusal.

"it's okay if you can't," she murmured
as an anglerfish saw me and swam away.
"I was just... curious."

I shake my head. "it's just....
hard to explain. I'm thinking."

the sea vents bubbled understandingly
and I thought about it, and this is what I told her:

red seeps up from the sea floor vents
mixes with the teal of the seaβ€”
"why is it teal?" she asks, and I respondβ€”
because blue is too sad and green is too animal.

she nods, and I continue.
the red from the sea vents mixes
with the red already in the waterβ€”
"where did that red come from?" she asks,
and I gesture out into the distance.

the shy angler hums happily at her fresh kill.
when she eats, the other fish spills red
and the angler has vermillion on its heart
for the rest of the day.
but red is also in baby sea turtles, their journey
makes them red, and their first taste of teal
washes it away. there's also red
when mantis shrimp get crabby
and when schools panic, and when
an octopus is born, and when
a penguin accepts a pebble,
and even more reds from similar places.

"are you red?" she asks, and I pause.
I watch the warmth swirl up past me
up into nothingness. up into every color
and no color, all at once.
and I reply:

there's red in the way I dance alone
and red in my shame when I see someone watching
there's red in my pen when I'm crying,
when words and tears flow in tandem,
there's red in my frustration, and in my pride,
and in other of my heartfelt places.

I'm too teal to be red. but I'm both.
that makes her smile.
"water is clear," she replies,
and we laugh. ALT
