this orange-fin anenome fish lives at one of the top layers of the Mariana trench. I thought the idea of a little fish wandering away from the reef to see the depth of the trench was pretty creepy, and I was also reminded of the boat scene in the beginning of Finding Nemo.

While it’s not as deep as the Mariana Trench, the largest undersea canyon on the West Coast of the United States begins right offshore from the Aquarium. The Monterey Canyon descends from a depth of about 60 feet (18 m) to nearly 12,000 feet (3,656 m) in a distance of 60 miles (97 km) off the coast. The canyon creates deep-sea habitats close to shore with a wealth of animals not found in shallower waters.
