Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. — Ephesians 6:11-12
Everyone is facing something. For some people it is a health challenge that has altered the entire landscape of their daily life. For others it is financial pressure that does not seem to ease no matter how carefully they manage. Some are carrying physical limitations that remind them every day of what they can no longer do. Others are fighting battles of the mind, struggling to find clarity, peace, and solid ground amid the noise and chaos the world generates without stopping.
And then there are the seasons when things are going well. When the pressure lifts for a moment and life feels manageable. But even those seasons do not last indefinitely. In the end, every one of us faces moments of battle. It is not a question of whether the fight will come. It is a question of whether we will be ready when it does.
Paul writes to the church at Ephesus with that urgency. Put on the whole armour of God. Not part of it. Not the pieces that feel relevant today and leave the rest for another season. The whole armor. Because the battle being described is not a partial one.
And then he names what we are actually up against.
We wrestle not against flesh and blood. This is one of the most clarifying statements in all of Scripture for the believer who is trying to make sense of their struggles. The difficult coworker is not the real enemy. The financial institution, the diagnosis, the relationship that will not reconcile, the circumstances that will not cooperate, none of these are the ultimate source of the battle. Behind the visible struggles is an invisible war. Principalities. Powers. Rulers of the darkness of this world. Spiritual wickedness in high places.
The battle is real. It is specific. And it is far larger than what we can see with our eyes.
That truth is not meant to produce fear. It is meant to produce clarity. Because a believer who understands the true nature of what they are facing will respond very differently from one who spends all their energy wrestling with the visible while the invisible goes unaddressed.
God has not left us unprepared for this fight. He has provided armor. Not as a suggestion, not as an accessory for the especially spiritual, but as the standard equipment of every believer who intends to stand. Each piece was designed for a specific purpose. Each one covers a specific vulnerability. Together, they represent the full provision of God for the battle He already knew we would face.
Over the coming devotionals, we are going to walk through each piece of the armor one at a time. The belt of truth. The breastplate of righteousness. The shoes of peace. The shield of faith. The helmet of salvation. The sword of the Spirit. And the posture of prayer that activates them all.
But before we examine each piece, the most important thing to settle is this.
You are in a battle. Not because something has gone wrong in your life. Not because your faith is insufficient. But because you are a believer in a world where a very real enemy is actively at work. The battle is not a sign that God has abandoned you. It is the context in which He has equipped you.
The armor is waiting. It is time to put it on. God did not promise you a life without battle. He promised you armor for every battle you would face.
Sometimes the most meaningful encouragement comes from hearing how God is meeting people in ordinary moments.
