The Great Barrier Reef by Helen Scales and Lisk Feng

Flying Eye Books have a FABULOUS selection of large format information or non-fiction books so I was delighted to receive a copy of this book – The Great Barrier Reef!

It’s packed with facts on how the reef was formed and pages and pages to pour over detailing the plants and animals that make the reef their home, as well as folklore, human history and a bit about pollution.

Lisk Feng’s stunning artwork is printed onto thick course-grained paper, giving the book a real environmental feel too. The rich colours and sheer variety of images makes this a book to return to again and again, and one that any fact-loving older child would love to spend time with.

As a child, I would have laid on my tummy on the living room floor, soaking up the sights and sounds of one of the greatest wonders of our planet. I’m glad not too much space is given over to the doom and gloom of the very real human threats to this precious habitat. I strongly believe that children who love the natural environment, will fight for it when they are adults. If we overwhelm them when they are young, they may ultimately feel powerless to make a difference.

So surround your children with books like this – that celebrate the joy of nature, fuel their curiosity and feed their desire to know more about the world they live in.
