Margie’s Mini Book Review – Echoes of a Lie by Broken Promises

Broken Promises: Echoes of a Lie <— BETRAYAL & REDEMPTION & PSYCHOPATHIC ANTI-HERO ALERT!!  THIS IS the first review Margie sent me for a book written by this author, and I’m just posting it now, but she sent me a BUNCH of insane, intense reviews for so many of her books, and she’s pretty much just declared that this is her current favorite author in this genre.

But I digress, lets begin her “Broken Promises” journey right here:

She said:

I stayed up to 2;30 am this morning on this book. OMG the MMC from hell. This is coming in parts.

A January 2026 release with a very angsty slant…we are dealing with a  psychopathic MMC and his beleaguered wife, the FMC. She experiences punishment by the MMC through silence and psychological mistreatment, particularly undermining the FMC’s confidence and emotional wellbeing.

The FM and OWs team up for revenge.

Oh boy…the roller coaster of betrayal is launching.

The main themes are:

– The FMC (a graphic designer) and the MMC (an architect) meet at a charity gala. She’s somewhat of an introvert and an empath…uncomfortable at these types of social events. He pretends to feel the same…he has a suspiciously inordinate number of things in common with her…plus he’s handsome and vibrant.

– The MMC starts the relationship with love bombing and mirroring…a technique sociopaths often use to study their targets to reflect their desires back at them. It’s an onslaught followed by an intense sexual connection in combination with gaslighting. She falls in love in four days.

– What the FMC doesn’t know is that everything the MMC is telling her is a script he uses to disarm women. Sadly he’s convinced her that she’s the center of his universe when in reality she’s his latest victim.

– Within eight months they’ve bought a house together. At some point they get married.

– The problems start in two months, beginning with a mixed up reservation time for a dinner with the MMC’s boss. The FMC was very careful/diligent when making the correct reservation based on the time given to her by the MMC. The reality…the MMC was gaslighting…he gave her the wrong time and blames her for the mixup because she was distracted…confused. It’s ugly. She starts doubting herself. He forgives her…she promises to do better…she’s the luckiest woman in the world…NOT.

– It’s the MMC’s first evil test…successfully convincing her to accept a lie as her own memory.
