This contemporary art fair guide is the calendar I keep: the major fairs that set the pace, the smaller satellites that shift it, and the routes between them.

Fairs are where the side conversations go public. You see what galleries are backing. What collectors circle. Which ideas are growing louder. Use this guide to pick a month, choose a city, and move cleanly through the week.

Pre-Travel Planning

Keep it light and focused. A little prep makes the fair slower and clearer.

• Before you go: mark 5 must-see booths and 2 nearby galleries.
• Tickets & hours: public days are crowded; mornings are best. Confirm re-entry.
• Getting around: group stops by neighborhood; plan one loop you can walk.
• If you’re collecting: ask price, edition, condition, provenance. Get it in writing.
• Pack list: comfortable shoes, water, portable charger, small notebook.
• Accessibility: review floor plans & elevator access; expect long cloakroom lines.

Nine Rules for Art Fairs

1. Enjoy it. You do not have to see everything.
2. Study the floor plan. Circle five anchors.
3. Build an itinerary. Leave room to wander.
4. Arrive early. Quiet hours are clear hours.
5. Talk to gallerists. Ask about the work and what’s next.
6. Trust your eye. Note what stops you and why.
7. Take care of yourself. Water. Food. Fresh air.
8. If buying, ask price, edition, and provenance.
9. Document. Photos and quick notes help later.

What An Art Fair Week Feels Like

Fair weeks are citywide. Museums extend hours. Galleries time openings. Talks, book signings, and screenings fill the gaps. The main fair is the anchor; satellites widen the conversation.

• Major fair: the temperature check. Established and rising galleries, curated sectors, crowds.
• Satellites: smaller, looser, more personal. Good for discovery and conversations.
• Programming: plan one talk or event per day. Keep the rest open.

You will see more than you planned and miss more than you hoped. That is part of the week. Keep moving. Keep looking.
