Premiere: Mercy Land Shares New Single “Summertime Climax”

Los Angeles-based duo Mercy Land debuted last year with their Termites EP, crafting a fizzy and nocturnal shade of synth pop. The band has referenced The Cure, Lana Del Rey, and David Lynch each as inspirations, but in recent months their music has also taken a more blown out and digital turn, incorporating an array of spiked electronic textures, effects-heavy vocals, and darting rhythms. Last month, the band shared “Clouds,” the lead single from their upcoming debut album, due out next year. Today, they’re following with another new single, “Summertime Climax,” premiering with Under the Radar.
“Summertime Climax” plays on a similar mix of nostalgia, garage beats, and crystalline melodies as artists like PinkPantheress, but the duo also brings this sound a dreamy digitized element. They paint in the track’s margins with serene synth tones and a chiming emo-tinged guitar riff, capturing the free-floating ease and underlying melancholy found in the dog days of summer as the blistering summer days melt together. In the second verse, Laura Jinn croons out a lulling confession: “I’m not really swimming / I’m just drifting here and there / I got all my hopes and dreams / I can’t contend with yours as well / Yeah, there is something brewing / It is difficult to notice / But it is beautiful and easy”. Yet, the chorus is a chirping electro pop gem, softening the track’s sadder undercurrents with a moment of utter carefree delight.
Jinn says of the track, “Tantrum was gone on a fishing trip and I was writing songs every day. I woke up one day with the idea of the production (the combo of a Midwest emo guitar riff + light electronic drums) and made the beat. I was thinking about the first time I watched The Graduate – I was home alone and saw Dustin Hoffman’s character drifting in life, the scene when he’s in the pool and his dad tells him he has to go and do something, just drifting among so much beauty, the sound of ‘Hello Darkness My Old Friend.’ I thought that the song needed to be ‘Summertime [something]’ and when I came up with ‘Climax’ I was like ‘lol that’s too stupid’ but… then it stuck.”
