PlayStation profits climb 37% despite falling PS5 sales

PlayStation 5 lifetime shipments have reached 95.3 million units worldwide, despite Sony recording another year-over-year decline in quarterly console sales.

Sony shipped 1.6 million PS5 consoles between April and June 2026, down from 2.5 million during the same period last year. This represents a decline of approximately 36% as the system approaches its sixth anniversary.

Despite weaker hardware demand, Sony’s Game & Network Services division generated ¥937.1 billion in revenue, remaining broadly unchanged from the previous year.

Operating profit increased by 37% to ¥54.1 billion, supported by favorable exchange rates and refunds related to US tariffs. Increased next-generation platform investment and restructuring expenses partially offset those gains, according to Sony’s financial results.

PlayStation’s monthly active users reached 125 million accounts in June, representing a 2% annual increase and a new record for that particular month. However, total gameplay time declined by 4% during the quarter.

PS4 and PS5 software sales reached 66.1 million units, including six million first-party games. Digital downloads represented 82% of full-game sales, leaving physical copies with an 18% share.

Sony has increased its full-year forecast following the stronger-than-expected quarter. The company also says it has secured enough memory components to meet its projected PS5 demand during fiscal year 2026, despite wider concerns about rising hardware costs and chip availability.
