Athens State University held its summer commencement ceremony on Saturday, July 25, celebrating the academic achievements of nearly 200 graduates. The ceremony recognized 144 students receiving bachelor’s degrees and 49 students receiving master’s degrees as they marked an important milestone in their academic journeys.
The ceremony was held at Lindsay Lane Baptist Church in Athens due to the ongoing construction of the Carter Center on Athens State’s campus. Family members, friends, faculty, staff, and university leadership gathered to celebrate the graduates and recognize the commitment and hard work that led to their commencement.
“Commencement is a meaningful time of celebration as we recognize the dedication, perseverance, and accomplishments of our graduates,” said Dr. Catherine Wehlburg, President of Athens State. “Each graduate has worked hard to reach this important milestone, and we are proud to celebrate their achievements and the many possibilities that lie ahead.”
Graduates from the College of Arts and Sciences, College of Business, and College of Education were honored during a single commencement ceremony. The ceremony celebrated the diverse academic programs and achievements represented by the graduating class, as students prepared to take the next steps in their professional and personal lives.
In addition to recognizing the Class of 2026 graduates, Athens State honored alumni celebrating the 50th anniversary of their commencement. Members of the Class of 1976 were recognized during the ceremony and inducted into the University’s 50 Year Club, a special tradition that celebrates the enduring connection between Athens State and its alumni.
The 50 Year Club recognition provided an opportunity for the University to honor the accomplishments and continued legacy of alumni who began their Athens State journeys five decades ago. Their presence alongside the newest members of the Athens State alumni family highlighted the lasting impact of an Athens State education and the generations of graduates who continue to carry the University’s legacy forward.
