It’s time to put on Taylor Swift’s Red, light some candles, and curl up with a spooky book! Lucy at The Book Belle is running the Cosy Autumn Readathon from Friday 22nd to Sunday 24th October, and I’m planning to join in. I picked out some cosy books that I could potentially read – this is sequel to last year’s post, 8 autumnal books that you should read right now.
Bridge of Souls by Victoria Schwab
Where there are ghosts, Cassidy Blake follows.
This is the third book in Victoria Schwab’s ghostly middle grade series, Cassidy Blake. The first two books are City of Ghosts and Tunnel of Bones, set in Edinburgh and Paris respectively. This spooky continuation is set in New Orleans.
Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia
I’ve heard fantastic things about this, a gothic horror set in the terrifying yet seductive world of High Place in the Mexican countryside.
Luckenbooth by Jenni Fagan
I bought this because it’s set in 1910’s Edinburgh (I can’t resist books set here!). Jessie, the devil’s daughter, has been sent by her father to bear a child for a wealthy couple, but, when things go wrong, she places a curse on the building and all who live there – and it lasts a century.
The Woods Are Always Watching by Stephanie Perkins
Stephanie Perkins’ books are always really fun and it’s been a few years since I read her last horror, There’s Someone Inside Your House. This is the companion novel.
Neena and Josie spent high school as outsiders, but at least they had each other. Now they have one last chance to be together before college – a three-day hike deep into the woods. They make a detour straight into a waking nightmare; and then into something far worse.
House of Hollow by Krystal Sutherland
I loved Krystal Sutherland’s Our Chemical Hearts and her first YA horror has received a lot of praise.
17-year-old Iris Hollow has spent most of her teenage years trying to avoid the weirdness that sticks to her like tar. But when her eldest sister, Grey, goes missing, Iris learns just how weird her life can get.
Lockwood & Co. series by Jonathan Stroud
Lockwood & Co. is a brilliant series that follows three young operatives of a Psychic Detective Agency as they battle an epidemic of ghosts in London. I’ve read the first three books (there’s five – so far?) and I thought I’d re-read the first via audiobook.
Fear Street series by R.L. Stine
R.L. Stine’s Goosebumps and Point Horror were among my favourites as a young teen and I so thought I’d buy Fear Street when the first four books were republished in this beautiful new edition. I absolutely loved the Netflix mini series.
Autumn photography by That’s Her Business.
