Unfortunately, I was unable to find very much understanding and empathy with this collection of Balroop Singh’s poems, as I have with others of hers that I have read in the past. Perhaps I am being too subjective about it, but while I accept that her poems are in the ‘Free Form’ style of presentation, I found quite a lot of them lacked some necessary punctuation. This meant for me, that through the various stanzas they failed to maintain the imagery and meaning there for the reader.
Normally I am much fonder of ‘Traditional’ poetry and tend to look for structure and metre, and even the occasional rhyme and alliteration. Without some of these things then I hope to find enough rhetorical language etc. in free verse for my enjoyment of a poem. I quite enjoyed Singh’s poems entitled ‘Moon Melodies,’ ‘Beyond Time’ and ‘Spring’ and found them uplifting enough to possibly fulfil the aims of the poet. In Moon Melodies I found alliteration and two rhyming couplets!
I feel that it was within the spirit of the poet’s intentions to make one reflect upon the ups-and-downs of life, and even to make one have a more positive attitude about things as a result. But, as I said at the start of this review the ‘anything goes’ ideas behind this free style collection needed more attention for me to enjoy a lot more of it.
