HOT 10 COMICS | CBSI Comics

1st Danny Ketch

Sorry had some technical issues with the site last night. So my Apologies that the list is late, but I don’t have much time to bang this out before i head to my son’s Swimming Championships. Also note this list was done as of Thursday night to avoid Spider-Man spoilers. So here we go…

So last week we all heard the huge news at SDCC that A-Lister Ryan Gosling was gonna play Ghost Rider. Many have speculated that he would be coming in to play Danny Ketch, which would make a lot of sense. I haven’t seen 100% confirmation of who he will be yet.

In any event this news triggered a huge pop in volume with 250+ sold (+1150%) at an Ovr Avg $77 (+$37) with the big sale being a CGC 9.8 $450 Newsie. That said, the Raw Avg is only $23 with the Raw High $63 for a Newsie. Another point of interest that illustrates how many copies of these are out there as this was a mega popular book in 1990, there were 4 separate lots of 10 issues that sold for $96.24.

WRITER: Roy Thomas
COVER ARTIST: Mike Ploog

1st Johnny Blaze

Well he could very well be playing Johnny Blaze, so a lot of interest returned to this much more expensive classic.

That price didn’t stop more than 50+ sold (+614%) at a huge Avg of $1,529 (+$808). And the absolute standout sale was a CGC 9.4 for $11,995

It is interesting that of the 50+ sold, Only 13 Raw copies sold at an Avg $840 with a High of $1,150

3 Greatest American Hero #1

WRITER: Tawnia McKiernan
COVER ARTIST: Rafael Loureiro

Recalled Printer Error

Collectors love a recall and FOMO takes hold. This issue had an error :artifact” image printed on the cover on top of the car that you can clearly see. While many recalls are valuable over time, even more are not. For every Action 869, there are 5 Saga #41’s. I think what the error is plays a lot into long term value with controversy always selling. But here its just a legit mistake that isn’t all that exciting and many shops may have even missed the notice to destroy/return.

In any event, this week saw 70+ sold at a Premium Avg $27 with a High $60. When I say premium that any sale in excess of $1 over cover. This week saw 30+ sold at a premium of that overall volume. But even when you include those 40 cover sale, the Overall Avg is still $15. That said I would be wary in any long term hopes for this book.

4 Queen in Black #1

WRITER: Al Ewing
COVER ARTIST: David Nakayama

Blind Bag Exclusive (Common)

Surprising many, this “common” outcome from the blind bags is one of the best hits. Folks love a good swimsuit cover and DNA nailed this one.

After only a day on the market there have already been 120+ sold at an Avg $13, with a High already hitting $20

5 Savage Dragon #281

WRITER: Erik Larsen
COVER ARTIST: Erik Larsen

NSFW Follow Up

Last issues controversy must continue here and many folks want to see the follow up to that NSFW shocking “splash’ page.

Already 60+ sold with the retro Cvr B once again being the standout at an Avg $14, and a High $25. Following that the Cvr A is only Avg $7, at a High $13. And trailing behind is the
Cvr C at an Avg $6, and a High $11 already

6 Chainkata #Ashcan

WRITER: Daniel Warren Johnson
COVER ARTIST: Daniel Warren Johnson

Retailer Edition Ashcan

Continued strong sales keep this retailer ashcan on the list despite the drop with Another 100+ sold while raising its Avg to $90 (+$7) while maintaining the High at $175 (-)

Be mindful that the full color SDCC Version (not eligible for my list) is also seeing huge increases with 24+ sold at an astounding Avg of $173, with a ridiculous High reaching $395. But again, as a con exclusive this version isn’t eligible for my list but thought the info was helpful context

7 Justice League of America #141

WRITER: Steve Englehart
COVER ARTIST: Rich Buckler

1st Team of Manhunters

So with the Green Lantern show just around the corner, we are seeing some interest in our old ring-slinger. That said this issue is sort’ve a back story origin of the android army version of the Manhunters (and not the solo man version we’ve seen previously) which is what buyers are focusing on.

With a huge jump in volume with 30+ sold (+1350%) at an Avg $13, the High this week hit $30 for raw copies. No graded sales this week.

8 Ghost Rider #1

WRITER: Gary Friedrich
COVER ARTIST: Gil Kane

1st Ghost Rider Solo Series

All things Ghost Rider are in demand this week, including his 1st solo series that also introduced Damien Hellstrom.

Another pretty expensive book seeing action this week with 25+ sold (+211%) at an Avg $565 (+$90) with the standout sale being a CGC 9.6 for $2,300

Mostly Graded sales this week as Raws Avg $330 and the High hit $600

9 Ghost Rider #28

WRITER: Howard Mackie
COVER ARTIST: Andy Kubert

1st Midnight Sons, Lilith

Well we also know apart from a solo GR film, we also were promised a Midnight Sons movie. And that becomes much more likely now with this A List casting.

That said interest returned to this book this week with 50+ sold (+733%) with a Raw Avg $9, and High of $20. If we included graded sale the Ovr Avg was $22, tanks in part to a CGC 9.8 High of $90 from the 10 graded sales this week.

10 Queen in Black #1

WRITER: Al Ewing
COVER ARTIST: JeeHyung Lee

Blind Bag Exclusive (Ultra Rare)

Finally this cover appears to be the other standout from this week’s Blind Bag offering and is listed as being Ultra Rare by Marvel. Not 100% sure what that means #’s wise but we can assume that makes it tougher.

In any event with 25+ sold at an Avg $39, and a High of $70, this is one of the few hits from these bags.

These are one off sales worth noting this week. Single sales may not warrant a place on the main list, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t note impressive and notable single sales each week.

Feral #25 1:50

Only 5 sold this week despite them moving at an impressive Avg of $100 and a High of $125. But just not enough volume to make the cut.

Avengers #6

This book nearly made it with 20+ sold at an Avg $8 and High of $12. And despite a CGC 9.8 sale at $115, this still wasn’t enough to make the cut in a bus week as this 1st “full” app of a future son of Black Panther is seeing ancillary heat thanks to the cast news. I expect more BP books to move this week as it was overshadowed a bit by the Ghost Rider announcement but folks will adjust.

Stillwater #1

Huge drop in volume is what kept this one off the list despite another 50+ sold (-50%)

Prices went up though as the Avg $15 (+$6) and High $23 (+$3). Even the CGC 9.8 High $102 (+$12). But again that big volume drop was too much to overcome this week.

Terminal #1 Blind Bag

Despite Tons sold of these blind bag editions, the prices took a big hit this week as buyers moved their $’s elsewhere. Look at the huge drops in price below and let that be a reminder about the dangers of FOMO as this is only week 2 of this release:

The Secret Avg $39 (-$17), High $75 (-$150)

#2 Avg $10 (-$4), High $12 (-$28)

#7 Avg $12 (-$1), $15 (-$11)

#10 Avg $11 (-$4), High $15 (-$15)
